When I did my last move, I filled a 10'4" x 16' room to the ceiling and still had to put some out in the garage.
When you can not move because of them, you know you have to do something.

You have finally filled up all of that extra, unused space around the house with trains - the 2nd bathroom, your half of the large walk-in closet, the space under the bed(s), the lower half of the kitchen pantry, the unused portion of the family rec room, etc.

I'm the type if it doesn't fit on the layout, I have too many. If I do want to add, it means disposing of one to make room. My days of displaying or collecting are over.
Then on the other hand, there are 3 engines I would like to add and have 3 engines I will dispose of when these come up at a reasonable price.

[Seriously, though, my "COVID hobby" has expanded from a single 6 X 5-1/2 foot layout, to an 8 X 8 foot layout, to *both*, and my workspace has recently expanded from a 4 X 8 foot table in an exercise room, to another table in common space, to *another* two tables . . . So far, SWMBO has at least tolerated her space being infringed upon, but I fully expect to find myself and my toy trains on the curb for recycling some day soon . . .  ]

When you have 30 sets and still build a nice 24' x 15' layout that has 4 loops and can run only six sets.

I know I have too many trains when they sit in containers under the layout or in a closet and never get used. Like Josef, I am not a collector. I like to have enough engines and rolling stock so I’m not always running the same equipment but I don’t need more than that. About 10 locomotives and 50-60 freight cars gives me enough variety. If a Brightline train ever becomes available I’ll add passenger service to my layout.
