I would say a vast majority of the train guys here are command just not with base 3 yet because like me I think it is a waste of money when there are so many other ways to run your trains. Most guys want a remote not a phone. I can run any Lionel engine with a cab 1, cab 1L, cab 2. I know of not one person in my area who is into trains has a base 3. Besides why should we be the beta tester. Let the early buyers buy them and then when everything is working then buy it if you want it. Dave Agreed but if the DCS Wi-Fi systems show anything, is that the bugs will never be worked out. Phone firmware is always evolving, and MTH has proven they can’t keep up. Yes I know MTH is a one man show when it comes to the tech stuff, but far as I know Lionel doesn’t have many more in the app development dept.

MTH NOT working bugs out? I have not found that to be true. Yet tell me about Lionel and how they can't support ANDROID. Really! Sold me two camera cars, a theater car and a caboose. BOTH EXPENSIVE! Android worked till I upgraded. NOW - NOTHING. Asked Lionel and got "we know but it is only with Android, go buy an apple product as they are cheap". REALLY? That is how it works now, Suck us in and then no SUPPORT. Oh yes I am going to rush and get the base 3 because surely they will support that. NOPE. Android I hear are having problems. BUT hey they are working on it. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

My phones have always been Android and this is another reason I like the remotes. You know Mth or Lionel are never going to upgrade every time a phone system to keep the system working. Btw I have heard that Lionel is working on a new remote, any truth to that? If they are working on a new remote wouldn't that make the base 3 useless? If that is the case maybe the base 3 is not selling as well as they thought it was going to. Pretty soon you may be able to pick one up, CHEAP. I think maybe Lionel jumped on the base3 to quickly, most train guys kept saying they rather have a remote, maybe they should have listened!!!!

No! I dont even have a base 3 and will not even buy one. I want a remote to run my trains. A updated version of the cab1 would do nicely. I see no need to ever buy the base 3.
Come on Lionel we have been telling you we want a remote. Now listen!!!

Isn't that what you want?

Right now I can run any Lionel locomotive with cab1, so there is no need for the base 3. Why should I spend that money to do the same thing I'm doing now? The base 3 imo is a mistake. All anybody ever wanted was a cab 3.

Reason 1: My 25 year old CAB-1/ Command Base died Reason 2: Since I run primarily new Lionel locomotives, I wanted a technology that allowed me to utilize their capabilities to the fullest.

I'm a bit disappointed in this thread, I was hoping for a discussion of real users dealing with real Bas-3 issues. So far its two pages of people complaining about a system they don't intend to buy with problems they can't describe. A thread squib for sure.

My reading of the comments on the web is folks are having experiences ranging from "no problem" to "cannot get anything to work" and everywhere in between. This tells me that the system is far from problem free, very likely because of the diversity of smart device operating systems that don't work well with the apps. Using a cab-1L or cab-2 is a great idea, I think, because these have probably been extensively tested inhouse at Lionel. That would be the advice I would give anyone at this point. Buy a cab-1L and wait and see if the apps get straightened out.
Lionel outsourced the software development and maybe has 2, maximum 3 people in house working on this. Not promising for a software, app based system given the rapidity of change and diversity of hardware and firmware, as noted by others in this thread. I hope they can get it straightened out because they sold a ton of the Base 3s and for some folks, that's all they have for command control, other than the Universal Remote (also a good idea for newer locos). If they cannot debug the apps fairly rapidly and make the system user error proof (a real challenge), you'll be hearing about a new cab-3 within the year.

Mad, what made you buy the Base3? Reason 1: My 25 year old CAB-1/ Command Base died Reason 2: Since I run primarily new Lionel locomotives, I wanted a technology that allowed me to utilize their capabilities to the fullest. Fair enough, to bad you don't have a Cab2 remote to go with it. One thing Lionel has done right is the Legacy electronics are the cats meow. Have you connected to Wifi and used the app? Any firmware updates, will be done that way.
