Pricing is now an issue for some of us looking to add to our collection and layout. Beings York is coming up I usually check out dealers, ebay and other sources to see what is selling and the prices being posted. From what I found is that some prices are not that bad overall. But prices do vary for the same items in the same condition from dealer to dealer. All sellers are great on some items and others I shake my head. I have seen MPC steam locomotives going $350-$475 range. I had alot of MPC at one time and although they were fine for the time I would not buy today for any reason. Newer items from around 2017 on are a little high IMO! The deals are in 2007-2016 (2007 on started the Lionel legacy) (2017 Bluetooth came online). Lots of good prices on MTH except protosounds era. Prices for some early protosound are way too high IMO!! Of course like everything check on what you want and the price from several sellers. And if your going to York use the information you have learned to do your shopping. Its what I do!!
I have 7 locomotives on my list for York but I will only buy one. If I find one of the 7 at a price it should be I'll be happy.

Yeah.
And in other news, after intense in depth research and analysis, scientists have discovered that water is wet. Film at 11.

I'll tell you what I noticed online Dealers are cutting their own throats I have two examples Ordered a GP9 from 3rd rail The price of 3rd rail is high already but he wanted to charge $60.00 to ship it Case 2- Went to order 2 MTH flats w/ trailers from a dealer in the same state as me When checking out they wated $38.00 to ship. I cancelled before pulling the trigger on both of these I sell alot of stuff and ship it all over the country I have never paid $60.00 to ship an engine cross country The most is about $25 And the dealer in my state that wants 37 to ship is absolutely price gouging on the shipping Two freight cars would be about $12.00 via UPS and less if using Ground advantage from the USPS Do they want to sell things ?

I think it’s much the same at York or any train show. You can find the same thing at one dealer for over $100 less than some other dealers. There is one guy who is now in the purple hall that is notorious for price gouging. I was doing a TMCC demo years ago at a Greenberg Show in Pennsauken. The dealer sold a couple a starter set and when they walked around to the next aisle saw the same identical set for a $100 less. They went back to the other dealer attempting to return the set and the dealer refused. An argument broke out and security escorted them out.

and what I posted is not for you and most others here but for the guys who may be new to the hobby and York. Yeah.
And in other news, after intense in depth research and analysis, scientists have discovered that water is wet. Film at 11.
my research has made me more informed of what I want. Ben also has brought up a good point when ordering online, yes shipping has gotten more expensive but what he stated is incredible. Some dealers are trying to make money off of shipping costs. I ordered a reefer from a dealer in Texas or wanted to charge me $49.00 shipping for a single car. It was cancelled!!!! He then banned from ever ordering from him. No problem there!!! Dave Btw my post above was not for most here but for the new guys who just got into the hobby and going to York Be informed before you buy.

This is so true. Unless something is the great white whale I've been searching and searching for, I never buy at the first walk around. I always look to see if anyone else has it cheaper. If the original item at the first table is gone when and if I return, oh well. Try again next time. Try this when you go to York. Try to id something that is fairly common that a lot of people might have. Note the prices when you walk around. They will be all over the map.

Guys, don't waste your time on eBay. Sales tax and shipping only make matters worse now. Prices are ridiculous vs. what you can get at train shows... assuming you're lucky enough to be within driving distance to a good show once or twice a year. Here in PA we're very lucky, as we have York and Allentown ATMA shows twice each year. You'll get a MUCH better bang for your dollar.
And shysters are ashamed to even show their face at Allentown ATMA. Very fair prices all around... both from dealers as well as guys like me who are often thinning out their collection.
eBay is such a joke, I don't even look anymore. And there are some sellers on eBay who I refuse to buy from -- even if they're the only seller for an item I'm looking for. Once I see who's selling it, I don't even need to look at the price, since it's ALWAYS uber-inflated. If you must, only use eBay as THE very last resort. And most definitely don't give shysters the satisfaction.

I use eBay frequently for buying and selling...never had a problem. There's plenty of opportunistic price-gouging seen at meets as well...buyer beware. Many sellers are delusional as to the value of much of this stuff.

I only buy if they offer free shipping. Of course we know it's in the selling price. Since there are no decent train shows or here in Michigan, Ebay is my only way to buy anything. The only store is on the other side of the state not too far from jdstucks.

We talking diesels or Steam? Cost me 50 or so bucks to ship steam engines from Mass to Seattle for upgrades. Can't get any father east and west than that.
But with that said, Scott should be getting a big discount with who ever he ships with and 60 is excessive. I do watch out for what people are charging for shipping and I do buy from Ebay for that rare must have item but I don't go crazy. There was someone selling a 3rdrail F3 AB set in NYC a month ago. In my opinion wanted to much for it, it was way close to retail for a used item. I passed but someone did buy it as it's no longer listed.
