After much consideration a decision and purchase has been made. Road Name first; the winner is Nickel Plate Road. Why you ask? During Vanderbilt's ownership, he barely kept the RR solvent which meant less traffic. Consequently the trains could run faster. The local press dubbed the Nickel Plate as the 'Meat Express Line' as each night six long meat trains ran and a couple of fruit trains during the day.* Somebody ought to do a custom run' 'Meat Express Line' train with woodside reefers. Are you listening Mr. Muffin? Next the engine type; 2-8-2 light Mikado USRA as it seemed to fall squarely in the middle of most of the suggestions, and my favorite almost local train store Sidetrack Hobbies had one NPK NIB. This engine will also fit comfortably within the limits of the layout. Thanks again to one and all for your replies from which I learned interesting information in the course of researching your suggestions. *paraphrased from Wikipedia Very good pick, 2-8-2 light Mikado. There were 614 built with first one seeing service in 1918 and last built in 1944. This engine fits right into the Billboard era which ended by law in 1937.

After seeing a video of a 2-6-0 mogul pulling some reefer boxcars, I bought a Lionel CN mogul and will probably buy some wood reefers to pull behind it as well.

I used to run an N Scale reefer train (wood and steel) with 32 billboard reefers. All of them were different. I never got around to it, but I kept thinking doing a custom reefer using the "Reefer Madness" movie poster on the car, and putting it behind the tender, would be a fun way to start the train.

The appeal to me of model trains is the combination of movement, color, sound, and light. This obviously excludes me from the strictly prototypical camp to which I take no offense and hope the feeling is mutual. One big roundhouse.
Other than the fantasy/seasonal themed trains with their LED lights and festive/eerie glow in the dark colors I feel that the woodside reefers especially those with graphics in addition to lettering fill that criteria.
I had resisted the woodside reefer rabbit hole for quite awhile. But now I am all in.

Can't wait to see your reefer train along with your new Mikado. Good pick. I'm like you not that prototypical when it comes making up a bunch of reefers. I go on what I like and color of the reefer. If I like it it joins the fleet.
Remember photos are a requirement!!!

Of course... if you have a LOOOONG string of woodside reefers, there's nothing like a Triplex to haul them around your basement empire!!! I recall the MTH Erie Triplex in the blue Russian ore paint-scheme was THE defacto steam locomotive to pull huge strings of Atlas-O woodside reefers back in the day, when "reefer madness" first hit us all. Now we just need Lionel to ship their Vision Line Triplex!!!

Now you tell me! Since you brought up a loooong consist, has anyone run a train where the front off the engine almost touched the rear of the caboose just to say they did it? Photos?
