Thank You. I was registered as 'folksinger', but somehow my account ceased to exist, so now I'm 'vintagemodeltrainguy'. I recently acquired by father in law's Marx Train Set. I would like to get it working again. I was able test the transformer and I was getting power to the tracks and I heard the motor, in the Train Engine, try to move, but then the transformer started to smoke. Looks like I need a new transformer and one of those CTC Lockon, connectors. I am hoping that the motor, in the train engine, is okay.

Good idea about getting a new transformer before you burn the house down with the old one. Welcome aboard!

What is the general consensus on vintage transformers? Use them, if they work or upgrade to something more modern?

I'm getting 10.5 volts at the terminals on the transformer and 10.5 volts at the CTC Locking Connector. I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the motor in the engine. The meter doesn't seem to be picking up any voltage, when I touch the meter to the tracks. 🤔 So, here is the motor that I have.

What is the general consensus on vintage transformers? Use them, if they work or upgrade to something more modern? Well, that depends on what you want them to do. Assuming the supply cord is still in good condition (or has been replaced) and there's no other obvious damage, a vintage transformer can continue to do what it was designed to do indefinitely. When your layout needs exceed what your vintage transformer(s) can safely handle, you can add additional old transformers, or upgrade to a heftier multi-throttle transformer (like the ZW that powers the four loops of my main layout) if you are running conventional, or change to one or more power bricks if you have command control and just need the power. Even after being retired from regular layout use, I find small vintage transformers are handy to keep at hand, to provide a ready source of AC at need for the workbench, or to power temporary holiday layouts.

Will a wind-up motor, fit into my m10005? Well, there were wind-up versions of the M10005, so I think it would at least be physically possible to swap in a clockwork motor, as long as there's a hole in the shell to enable inserting the wind-up key. I'll check mine later to see if it has such a hole, even though electrified.

And one more question, for the gallery ...... Was there originally a headlight lense, in the front and what was in this rectagular space, in the rear. An inquiring mind wants to know. Attachments:

And one more question, for the gallery ...... Was there originally a headlight lense, in the front and what was in this rectagular space, in the rear. An inquiring mind wants to know. No lens in mine, either, or any indication there was ever a fitting for one: The rectangular space is the end of one of the middle cars, because you are missing the final observation car (I temporarily detached the final car to take this shot): This is the back end of the observation car (a bit beat up on my train!), which is the true end of the train: And here's my whole consist, which appears to have one more car than your set: Oh, and I was unable to locate any obvious keyhole, but there are plenty of portholes and other openings that might serve to give a windup key access to a clockwork motor:
