If we apply the supply and demand principle, prices will continue to rise sharply every year until such time that sales taper off. I can purchase a very nice garden tractor with a mower deck for $4.000. Does this say something about the cost of "premium" trains? Are these small mechanical items really worth the price?

I introduced a new member to our shooting club. All the required equipment including 4 firearms, and accroutement, his outlay he said was less then one of our new engines, which he is also into O gauge. He is into command control and is satisfied with present systems and won't be going into any upgrades. He said if I want it to go forward or backwards, and hear a whictle blowing, and bells ringing, its all I need. Since his start in O gauge, he says he only buys reasonable priced used items to add. His layout is 3 times my size.

My mower and deck cost me close to 17 thousand. Now of course that is a subcompact JD tractor. BUT it does not bring me the JOY that my trains do. I guess that makes the trains PRICELESS.

LOL, you would not believe what a new John Deere tractor and Combine Hatvester cost me in 1988 for the farm. I could have bought every BIG Boy Lionel ever made with the amount I spent then.
