Received this E-Mail from Pats Trains stating that RMT will be releasing their first scale boxcar for $30. It will be interesting how it will match up to a scale boxcar from Atlas, Lionel or MTH. The following is the E-Mail from Pats Trains, it included a rendering of the boxcar but it did not show up when coping to this forum for some reason.

Yep, ordered the BN wood chip cars when first announced about a year ago. Have not heard of any updates for about 6 months. I guess it is one of those " when they show up is when they show up ". Bill www.youtube.com/user/seayakbill

Some of their recently announced reefers really appeal to me, but I'd like to see a sample first to see the quality. I collect MTH 36' reefers, and in my opinion Atlas reefers are a little better quality, but I'm okay with that. The MTH reefers generally start in the upper $60's and go up from there, so I understand the significant difference in price from the RMT offerings will no doubt mean lesser quality. I would just like to determine if that bothers me enough to prevent buying them.

Last we heard RMT was doing business through a hobby distributor. It may still be owned by Walter giving exclusive rights to a distributor. I'll give them credit for trying to keep prices affordable but will reserve comment on other issues.

The long wait is a shame because I really like RMT. I see plenty of products not nothing to buy.......

I have a hard time associating scale with RMT It's too bad RMT's newest factory royally fouled up the trucks, wheelsets and couplers of the recent production of ore cars. Because the graphics were EXCELLENT, and you'd be hard-pressed to decipher scale vs. toy. Even MTH's ore cars under their Railking line could hold their own with ore cars offered as Premier. There was really no difference except for price. A bit strange.

What I heard that Walter has nothing to do with the company anymore! Dave I thought I recall reading (or being told) that Emery now owns RMT. Walter might still be keeping an eye on things to keep the transition moving in the right direction, but it's really Emery's baby at this point. And they really need to redeem themselves after the ore car debacle. From a quality standpoint, the graphics were excellent. But that was all for naught, since the trucks, wheelsets and couplers made that rolling stock the absolute worst purchase I've ever made in the six decades I've been enjoying model trains.
Some dealers have sworn off carrying the RMT brand -- even those who flat out canceled their custom-run ore cars after what happened. OTOH, I've heard that some dealers are picking up those "canceled" custom-runs from places like Brady's Train Outlet who dropped RMT altogether. Pat's Trains and Hennings Trains might be two of the dealers who are picking up those custom-runs after Emery re-issues them with better quality trucks, wheels and couplers.
Really a shame... because RMT rolling stock from 10+ years ago had no issues with trucks and couplers. And they blew out some of those for around $15 per car at the time.

Can the cars be salvaged with new couplers from another manufacturer?

Yep, I also heard that Emery is calling the shots for RMT Trains. Also heard that RMT's manufacture is the same company that manufactures Menards Trains. If that is accurate seems like they are pretty busy and fitting in RMT into the production schedule could be causing the delays. Bill www.youtube.com/user/seayakbill

... I thought about ordering the ore cars. I did not hear about problems with the trucks and couplers with the ore cars. Can you elaborate? Can the cars be salvaged with new couplers from another manufacturer? The ore cars were a disaster. The trucks/wheelsets were so bad, the cars couldn't even roll on straight track without derailing. So forget about any kind of curved track or turnouts.
I suppose if you had purchased some and you happened to have replacement trucks from Lionel, MTH or Atlas... you could swap out the junk that RMT's factory used. However, once word got out about this fiasco, dealers stopped mailing out pre-orders or selling stock in stores. I've lost track of where the ore cars actually reside now. I first heard dealers returned them to Emery in Easton PA. And Emery was then planning to install replacement trucks/couplers on ALL of their stock at the Easton warehouse before shipping them out to dealers who would be willing to accept them (again). But as I said earlier, some dealers have decided to just flat-out drop the RMT brand altogether. However those with a long-time, healthy relationship with Walter might be inclined to give RMT one last try. Time will tell.

According to the RMT website their tank cars, wood chip cars, ore cars and reefers are due in sometime this month.
I'm interested in the wood chip cars and the tank cars but I’m going to wait to be impressed before firing up my credit card.
