Aside from Polar Express (because it is the best train move hands down), what are your favorite train movies and why?
And a bonus question, why is it that during train movies that include some sort of mahem on the train, good/bad guy fights, explosions, destruction to cars along the consistent, etc., the engineer doesn’t just stop the train and get emergency services involved? Instead the trim just keeps on rolling like nothing is happening. Ok, I’m sure it would make a terrible movie but it always bothers me for some reason.

Not sure I have a favorite. But here are a few I like.
"Tough Guys". Sort of a whimsical action/comedy of two old guys who get out of jail and decide to rob a train.
"The Train". If you like WWII history, the Germans are trying to steal all of the French art history near the end of the war to reap the riches. The resistance is trying to stop them. It's an old movie, but well done.
While not a train movie, "Back to the Future III" is a favorite of mine watching Doc Brown try to get that locomotive up to 88 mph so he can get his Delorian back to his time. But if you have never seen this movie, you should probably watch #1 and #2 or you might have a tough time following the story.

"The General" from 1926, starring Buster Keaton. A terrific movie from the silent film era.

Toccata for Toy Trains is my all time favorite. True it is very short compared to the others that have been listed but I never get tired of watching it.

I like those mentioned above - Keaton’s masterful General and The Train, PE and Toccata too. Also check out Buster Keaton’s neat short ‘The Railrodder’, filmed when he was 69 and near the end of his life. Done in his traditional frozen-faced silent movie style it was set as a cross-Canada speeder trip, Keaton-esque stunts and gags included. Dave

Going back to 1941 before most of us were born, there was a comedy movie called "Broadway Limited" that is supposed to be a take on the PRR Broadway Ltd made its theatrical view. It combines comedy with a bit of drama and I enjoyed watching it. You can check it out on You Tube.

One memorable part of Von Ryan's Express is when at the end, Frank Sinatra is gunned down running after the escape train going over a bridge while Trevor Howard is on the observation car deck. Alfred (The movie is one that my Aunt took me to see at a Lowe's theater in NYC; it was a big deal for me - the first movie I ever went to.)
