Hey everyone, I wanted to share images of my new homemade paper switch tower that I'm using to cover our landline phone (yeah, I know). I started with some free building front images and then used photoshop to cut and paste windows into how I thought it should look from other such buildings. I then found a plasticville roof online for about $3 and a box of crackers at my local Safeway box for $5 (though I got to eat the crackers), printed the photos on 2 sheets of paper and glued them to the box. Overall, I enjoyed the project and like the outcome. Mike

Very nice! A couple of thoughts: - I think it might have been simpler just to print your "shell" on cardstock, and eliminate the need for paste or a cracker box (OTOH, it's nice to have crackers handy when you want them!). I've become a real fan of cardstock structures, which are inexpensive and almost infinitely flexible (depending on your Photoshop skills!) in their 2D simulation of 3D surfaces. - Definitely drill a couple of holes to route the wires through the layout, rather than running them on top!

You did a great job on the switch tower, Mike. It looks good and is a clever way to hide the phone but I gotta ask, why do you have a phone on your layout? It seems like an odd place to keep a phone.

Someone asked about why I keep a phone on my layout and the simple fact is that I really don't have a layout. I have a home office with trains running around it! As a working history professor, I spend a lot of time at this desk grading papers, zooming with students, and conducting my own research and writing. So what looks like my layout with my Cheyenne Wyoming depot, a generic building block, and now my switch tower is actually my color printer, scanner, and phone. I suppose future projects will cover the Zoom microphone, my computer screen and perhaps the internet mesh unit beyond the phone. Take a look. Thanks for the feedback! Mike

Paper buildings are the best! Great job on disguising desk items.

Yes! I think if I had a little more room a drive in movie theater might be a fun idea!

Nice job, thinking outside the box, no it was not a joke!! Mmm, no, it was more like "thinking *inside* the box" . . .
