I have spent the evening trying various combinations to get the DCS Remote Commander system to work. Nothing works. To summarize, I have taken the following steps:
- reset the engine to factory defaults
- confirmed that the DCS/DCC switch is set to DCS when testing the Remote Commander
- tested the engine in DCC mode, and it works fine, using the MTH Z- 500
transformer
- Confirmed that the remote batteries are working, and that the receiver is receiving from the remote (the green light blinks when pressing buttons on the remote.
In summary, I suspect that either the DCS setting on the engine is faulty, or that the receiver is not working. Two questions.
1. Can I use my Lionel ZW transformer with the MTH Remote Commander instead of using the brick from the MTH Z - 500 transformer?
2. Is there any way to test the engine to confirm if the DCS switch is working properly?
I have no other MTH engines equipped with Proto 3.0, so I have no way to test the Remote Commander system with another engine.

Good news. After resetting the engine to factory defaults, WITH THE REMOTE, it started right up. Apparently trying to reset the engine by using a transformer won't work. Thank you to all who have given suggestions on how to remedy the situation!

Good news. After resetting the engine to factory defaults, WITH THE REMOTE, it started right up. Apparently trying to reset the engine by using a transformer won't work. Thank you to all who have given suggestions on how to remedy the situation! The technology gremlins figured that they had messed with you enough and went on to torment the next poor soul!

If trying to get any DCS feature via a transformer, if your timing is not perfect with throttle control you'll end up pulling your hair out. Glad things are working.
