Harborbelt70 mentioned in another thread: “The focus has been on 3rd Rail engines so far but the other quality products produced under the 3rd Rail/Scott Mann umbrella are passenger cars under the Golden Gate Depot banner.” I couldn’t agree more. My first introduction to 3rd Rail was through their Golden Gate Depot passenger car models. They were and are the finest made. The roll as though they were nearly frictionless. I have a number of them but my first was the 1948 Broadway Limited Observation Car. How do you rank GGD passenger cars?

How do you rank GGD passenger cars? Short answer is that they are the best cars going today by a long shot. But I can't pass up this opportunity to contradict myself on one front: the finest set I have from Scott Mann is the GM Train of Tomorrow and that was issued under the 3rd Rail banner! As I remember, the reason was that the set includes the E7 engine and engines are 3rd Rail's province. Anyway, I have not got it out at the moment but here's a few snaps of the "Moon Glow" car complete with its 3rd Rail box: Pure GGD are the SP Daylight cars, soon to be reissued (I trust). This Tavern Car is one of my favorites (for reasons I fear might be obvious - mine's a double!): If I was ever crazy enough to try to model the interior of a Daylight Tavern Car, it would be this one from the Shasta Daylight:

IMO, 3rd Rail/Sunset Models makes some of the finest O scale passenger cars and engines in the O gauge market. If your have ever seen them up close they are absolutely well detailed, well made and beautiful. Their quality and realism is incredible. So why don't I use them? There are O SCALE models and need very wide curves (I believe O54 minimum) to operate on correctly. On my layout there are even one or two 031 curves and a few 042 curves. That limits running to O gauge equipment. This is adequate as when everything is running the casual observer views the layout presentation in the context of the whole. If the room to expand was there, 3rd rail train would be my choice.

I have a question. It appears these are fantastic cars but they also seem to be unpopulated. Do they come with people or are you putting them in?

They come populated with GGD’s own brand of “Little People” - which are fine although not as good as Railking figures. They are separately available through GGD on their website if you want to have a look, and do the job of setting off GGD’s usually finely detailed interiors, which are far superior to anything produced recently by Lionel or MTH.
