The Lionel scale F3's have a wide gap between units and Lionel used to sell a shorter shank coupler head to lessen the gap but no longer have it and will not replenish it for stock again. The Lionel stock number is 6304678055. Any ideas from anybody on how I could lessen the gap? Here is the picture showing the gap, Dave Attachments:

Is it possible to make up a solid custom drawbar from styrene or phenolic insulation board? Could be a worthwhile project for the 3d printer owners among us. Dave

I can only offer a suggestion if not a solution. Is it possible to use coupler shanks from MTH or Atlas? Maybe figure out a way to attach them if they’re available? I’m not sure how the Lionel couplers are attached.

The couplers are attached the same for both Lionel and MTH and the coupler head I used before are no longer stocked by Lionel. Ill just keep on looking, I rather use them then the 805 scale couplers from kadee.

One word. Kadee. One of the 700 series couplers. There are few out there that take these engines and go nuts adding details, fixed pilots, making them look at close to the real thing as possible

I found with mine (which is about from 2004) that I could remove the couplers but would have to install a new plate or mount at the ends of each engine to allow for the Kadees to be attached. Lionel did sell short shank couplers for some diesels and I actually found enough of them online via eBay to do the B units. If you hunt around on eBay you can usually find remaining supplies of parts like these.

One reason I don't have many diesels. I hate the swinging pilot, just looks wrong. I'd have 3rdrail diesels for the option to swap out the pilots but you are getting generic sounds for a high price.
