When I saw the Von Ryan's Express movie as a kid, I knew little about trains; none the less, I enjoyed the thrill of the train chase through the scenery, and the heroic story line of the WWII POW escape. I have done some research about one of the steam locomotive used in the movie, and came up with the following. Evidently, some European companies have made models Alfred
In the movie, the pursuit train was hauled by a Class 743 2-8-0. This started life as a Class 740, but in 1942 was rebuilt with twin "Franco Crosti" feedwater heaters, large cylinders angled downward at the rear either side of the boiler. This loco had no stack on the smokebox but had two angled stacks just foward of the cab. Rivarrossi did produce the Italian built Class 740 2-8-0 which was generally similar to the American 735.
