Well, quite a lot of Marx HO and K-Line stuff there, and much of it looks like it has never been out of the box or blister pack. I can't say I spotted anything in O gauge I'd regard as rare but I wish the seller luck in getting it off his hands.

I find it a bit sad when retirement and age forces a train collection to be sold off but nothing is forever. In this case Roy seems to be pricing his stuff fairly. Most items look to be new or near new. This is not the first time that we've seen train collections being sold off. In many cases the owners never ran any of it;just bought it to have it.

I took another look at his ETSY listing and notice that we are seeing what is left of about 1,000 items as he has already sold over half. He also comments that he got a lot of enjoyment out of collecting going back to boyhood, much of the collection was Marx and he thinks it's time to let other people who want these things enjoy them. I think that's a better approach than leaving it to his family to have to sort out eventually and probably with the costly intervention of an auction house. Besides, there's limit to what you can get out of having items that have never been out of their boxes!

Well I'm going to run trains till the good lord calls me home. Yes my nephew will be in charge of selling my trains, I have left him a note that all he has to is call a shop that will come out and take all including my dept56 collection. He also has the choice to sell it himself, trash it, sell it to someone else. Btw he says that model trains are a waste of time and money.

There is some sadness in ending a train hobby; however, all good things must come to an end. Over the next decade, I am sure that there will be many pre- and post war train items that will get to the secondary market. My trains? Well for me - wishful thinking, would have me setting up a layout in my son's house, and leaving it in working condition for him and the grand kids. Alfred

I desperately need to trim down the collection, but I'm now at a point where folks are bringing me stuff found in the attic of their home or their parents' home, frequently with a "Hey, I heard you collect old trains...here's something that belonged to my father", followed by "We're selling the house and have to get rid of all the stuff in it" or "We're moving to Florida".

Alfred Yeah, I think you've hit on the same formula I've been developing: try to foster an interest in the kids and grandkids (and great-grandkids, if you're lucky enough to have them!), and help them get started. Like many here, I was gifted a train set as a kid (some of which survives and I still run regularly), in my case by my retired PRR signal engineer grandfather, and I'm currently considering doing the same for two of my "remote" great-grandkids. Passing on some of your valued trains to descendants who will appreciate them is a treasure, and as for the rest of my accumulated treasures, I'd rather see them go to those who will appreciate and use them than remain as a burden on relatives with absolutely no interest in the hobby. A staged downsizing at some point will leave less to be dealt with, and will rationally liquidate your treasures into more of a form most heirs can appreciate!
