So I was at local train show in November and a seller had some 3rd rail engines for sale with out their instructions.
I purchased one for an amazing good deal and lo and behold it had TMCC and sound from 3rd rail too. It was not marked anywhere on the box or engine.
So my question is; When looking at Ebay or other future train shows, how do you determine if the locomotive has TMCC or not? Is there a cut of date when conventional no sound was made, QSi w sound was made, and lastly TMCC with sound?

Good question. I have a few 3rd Rail/ Sunset locomotives that were made by Williams for 3rd Rail, I believe. They are a bit simpler in detail and usually have the QSi sound. I need to dig them out and see what Is what with them.

Very hard, there manuals suck. I can usually tell as I'm a 3rdrail follower. So if you see one on Ebay, ask me what it may have. Over the past twenty years, they used to have just TMCC, TAS EOB, and now Electric cruise.

I notice photos on Ebay that show a switch below the cab for run program... however some sellers hide / or do not show that area. Another location is the plug into the cab. some TMCC equipped engines do not even have a run/program switch. The one I purchased, the streamlined Q2, which is VERY rare, had a double layered pin plug. possibly a 6 or 7 pin? Usually if the seller does not designate TMCC I walk away. I have asked the seller on these and most say I do not know... sold as is.

You got a really old one. Lots of guys out there that can upgrade them for you. They can be made to run very well

I have asked the seller on these and most say I do not know... sold as is. I have that engine too. Yes, it is comparatively old if you reckon 12 years falls into that category. From memory it has EOB and generic steam Railsounds; virtually all the 3rd Rail engines I have from around that time, which is 5, have the same sounds. They are relatively easy to upgrade to present day ERR components. It's like Gary says. I think what you have to watch out for are older engines that are conventional-only and have QSI sounds. They may also lack puffing steam and Seuthe smoke generators. More reliable than the original MTH Protosounds/PS1, which I would not touch with a barge pole, but no command control. These are not easy to upgrade because it means dealing with drilling into brass and die cast components and of course the detail on them is pretty delicate. By all means ask here if you can't find out info from the seller. A lot of 3rd Rail old stock has never been run and may not even have been unpacked!
