While handling the unwanted growth that I was cutting from trees in our yard, it occurred to me that some branches could be used as logs on my layout. (Yes, I still successfully use saws; and I have all my fingers to prove it.) From the crab apple, mulberry, and fig cuttings, I cut one-half to one-inch diameter relatively straight sections to about an eight inch length. I filled a log car with the sections (as shown in the photo) – I may make some substitution. The 3 ‘logs sitting on the surface are from a fig tree. I am going to experiment with mulberry sections to use with a log unloading car. They are light, pretty smooth and resemble the artificial stained wooden logs that are supplied with the car. A selection of different tree sections will be placed near the mill. Other tree types can be used to display different colors and textures. Alfred

On a more serious note, after a wind and rain storm brought down a few tree branches this winter, I cut a few thin branches on my chop saw into 12” ‘logs’ to put on some flat cars to ride behind my Western Maryland three truck Shay.

Brian, It's all meant in fun and good spirits (non-alcoholic). Good combo to have the Shay pull your WMDlog consist. Very nice. How many cars and logs on each? Who made the Shay? Alfred

I have used stone dust - sifted and screened (from the same rock crushing plant that Conrail used to get theirs) for ballast; occasionally used a real rock when appropriate; and used a product from a local hardware store called Winter Sand for basic ground cover (less than $5 for 80 Lbs.) All 3 products shown in pic below. As an aside NEVER use real water; it does NOT play well with electricity!

I would not use cat litter for ballast it not only smells its dusty and too big to represent ballast. There is better stuff out there rather then cat litter.

I am glad that I did not ask if anyone used edible materials on their layout. Alfred

.......Good combo to have the Shay pull your WMDlog consist. Very nice. How many cars and logs on each? Who made the Shay? Alfred Alfred, apologies for the late reply! For my logging consist I have a MTH Premier 'Hillcrest Lumber' six car flat car set with simulated logs (20-98120). I had cut about 25 'logs' from the branches ranging from 1/4" to 2" thick. I'm thinking about getting several Menards flat cars with stakes to hold the 'logs', but I may opt for some better quality flat cars. I don't know how many of the cuts will load on each car until I fit them.
As for the Western Maryland Three Truck Shay, it's made by Lionel with Legacy, Legacy RailSounds & Odyssey II that was delivered in early 2018. (6-84239)
