The Atlas Spring 2023 Catalog has been released. As always a nice collection of rolling stock so I placed my order with Mr. Muffin's Trains.
What I am ordering:

Atlas O 3001392 - Premier - 2-Bay Offset Hopper Car "Maine Central" x 4
Atlas O 2002412 - Trainman - 40' Stock Car "Canadian Pacific" x 1

Maybe just a one-off “odds-and-end” piece of rolling stock or two… perhaps a couple of Berwick boxcars. But even those aren’t definite “must haves”. Very nicely detailed boxcars though. They've always been a favorite of mine.
Nothing else really called my name in this catalog. After splurging on a few 2022 special-runs that hit the street over the past several weeks, it really feels nice to just browse with no underlying need to buy more. Heck… I’m even looking at MTH’s daily email announcements with a bit of a ho-hum attitude for now — unless I really see something cool.
Prices are once again pushing new highs — or at best, solidly holding their own in the stratosphere. The UP SD70MAC in the ONE paint scheme looks eye-catching, but I just don’t feel the need to own it. So I’ll save the $600+ street-price outlay for when Lionel delivers its Trainworld special-run black/red KATY later this year which I already pre-ordered. We all have our limits I suppose. Sigh...
Don’t get me wrong… I’m glad to see Atlas offer products in the O-Scale space. I just wonder how much longer buyers can continue paying these prices for EVERYTHING they see. Those days are gone for me, and I’m OK with saying that. There are only so many dollars to shell out for non-essential items.
As an FYI though... I just received an email alert from Atlas this morning indicating their highly detailed O-Scale auto carriers are expected to arrive at Atlas' warehouse in NJ during mid-May... then off to dealer shelves shortly thereafter. At $140MSRP each, they're not exactly chump change, if you wanna make a big unit train of these gems. But splurging for a string of these might make it easier to pass on anything in the new catalog!!!
BTW, these auto carriers were first announced with an ETA of 4Q2021, so product is running a good year plus overdue. Tough part of the business model for sure. I practically forgot about these.

I have ordered so far 3 Berwick cars, UP, Rio grande and One. Also Gatx Rapid discharge car. No engines, just too high imo.

I think Atlas makes very high quality trains but I’m not ordering anything from them or anyone else. I have more than enough trains and don’t need any more.

Not a lot on this catalogue for Canadian railroaders. Canadian Pacific 40’ stock cars are reasonably priced relative to the last run - not something that we can say much anymore.
Good news is the Canadian Toy Train Assn is doing two custom run 40’ Pacific Great Eastern stock cars - these folks turn out nice club cars.
So it’s looking like we’ll be able move some more livestock a year from now.

I agree that Atlas makes very fine products but more freight cars are just not for me - no space for them quite apart from the cost, but I can see their appeal to a wider audience.

Curious, is there an easy way to disctingush between the original Altas products and the new MTH products. Will the MTH products be enhanced to the Atlas standards? It seems hard to keep track of the differences.

I have some of the new AtlasO 50' high cubes and they are very nice I also have some of the older MTH MTH 50' high cubes and they look almost identical. Can't find much difference.

It seems hard to keep track of the differences. The MTH equipment was already pretty good. But I believe that Atlas has enhanced some of the tooling on rolling stock and locomotives. The only real identifier is on the box. Atlas O “Premier” are the MTH tooled items.
