Hi all This year will be the year of the Big Boy for me. I’ve been looking for one for the last 2-3 years without success. The special run for Mr Muffins has grabbed my attention. It will require some layout re-engineering for me but I’m looking forward to it. Isn’t that what the hobby is about? Don’t really have room for it but at it’s worse it would look great in a display case. I know I’ve put the bulls eye on my back, but I’m looking forward to its arrival. Such an awesome engineering machine. PJ I wanted a BB and when Lionel came out with all the features and I had sold some stuff and gotten a good pre-order price, I took the plunge. I've had a few problems, like with the depleting coal quit working and 6 weeks at Lionel and then only worked for a couple of runs. Rather then send back to Lionel, seeing how some piece fell off and couple screws loose I found in Styrofoam. I let the coal depleting alone, repaired broken off pieces as well as found were the screws went in Tender. When I run, I have to make room for the overhang, no problem. But It sits in our office 99% under glass to admire mostly. Not sorry I bought it, but couldn't afford the new prices today.

Most people I’ve talked to have encountered similar experiences to what you’ve described. Sometimes it’s better to NOT bring something to market, when the only reason for doing it is because you can. And Lionel’s depleting coal load is one of those features.

I for one applaud that there is at least one company out there pushing the technological envelope in O gauge. We should support the creativity of our O gauge manufactures.

I seriously thought about not even giving this post the dignity of a response. But you're new "here", so you can take this for what it's worth.
No sir. It's NOT fashionable "here" to be a "negative Nancy" (your words). And nobody here needs to outdo one another. That's YOUR narrative... and it's a false one. If you expect to remain in good graces "here", I suggest you get with the program and realize OGF members have the freedom to express our views honestly, objectively and RESPECTIVELY. That means taking the bad with the good. When the importers deliver a grand slam product, we praise them. And when they trip over themselves with a blooper, we call them out for it. It comes with the turf, when we're demanding excellence in the products for which we're paying premium dollars. And that's not gonna change anytime soon -- even in the midst of folks who come "here" thinking that the importers can do no wrong, regardless of what they bring to market or how they price it.

Again, we are lucky that technological innovation is alive and well and we should appreciate that. We also should want all the remaining O gauge manufacturers to thrive to keep this hobby going.
Everyone here has the freedom of expression. It never occurred to me that coming here and me expressing a positive thoughts about Lionel, MTH and Atlas and our hobby when be seen as a negative by some.
Now I am being told I need to be “getting with the program.” Well my “program” is about taking joy in the hobby, being excited about new trains from all manufacturers, people’s layouts, upcoming train shows, sharing new product ideas…. There is a lot to be positive about.
My program doesn’t include constant bashing of manufacturers and nitpicking or constantly complaining about prices when one has no clue about the economics of the train hobby and that complaining about prices will have absolutely no effect on those prices.

It’s a good thing to be positive but saying that some of our members are trying to outdo each other as “Negative Nancys” is insulting, offensive and extremely negative.
Our members are not constantly bashing manufacturers, nitpicking nor constantly complaining about prices. I suggest you take a little time to get to know our members before you tell them how much better than them you are.

We have all kinds of opinions here but no matter what yours may be you can express them without fear. Courtesy and manners go a long way amongst adults. If you don't like someone's opinions you are more then welcome to give your own at what they got wrong but as I said above with courtesy and good manners. No need to call people names or insults. I like your passion and always keep that passion for our great hobby. It is also great to have another "brother in arms" with us.
Btw I am a Lionel and MTH guy so when I criticize I do it out of concern not out of hate.

I’m open to all manufacturers. I just want value for my dollar.
When I see it, I shout it from the hilltops. When it’s lacking, I call a spade a spade.
As far as pricing goes, Lionel has shown they can offer value for the dollar. The upcoming PRR L1s Mikado is an incredible deal. Especially at the preorder price. This assumes it retains the original MTH gear box and isn’t retooled to use the self detonating Legacy K4s gear boxes.
That said, in literally the next catalog, the PRR I1sa decapod is $500 more! Pictured with the wrong tenders to boot! And don’t forget, some of those L1s models had custom BRASS tenders!

Dave In the short time I have been here there have been multiple threads complaining about Lionel's prices, complaining about new Lionel technology and there was even a "joke" thread with a meme implying that people that pay Lionel's prices are, as per the meme, "Stu Pid." I am not the one bring negativity here., I am only commenting on what I see.

A Facebook meme/quote just popped into my Facebook Newsfeed, and it's so appropriate for much of what we see, read and hear these days. So I thought I'd share it with everyone here.

There is the truth and your opinion.

I think the problem with the coal load functionality is that it was one more thing to break. It's like the automatic opening doors on some of the Lionel subway sets. Was a wow factor when they worked. But people also didn't want to think how much the high cost of the BB was because of adding the coal load functionality. And honestly, for me, and probably many others, the coal load wasn't all that much of a wow factor in the first place and few visitors to the layout would even notice or care about. Realistic chuffing, sounds, are enough.

Despite Lionel's colossal prices and inconsistent QC, I will be ordering Vision Line big boy 4019.
The smoke deflectors and blackened drive gear make this a unique and interesting model. I know the depleting coal load is temperamental, so I will turn it off after the novelty wears off.
My recent Vision Line Class A and Mohawk both had minor defects, but overall are awesome. I expect the same from the next run of the Big Boy
