I didn't walk away from Lionel. They walked away from me. Where did they go? Into the Stratosphere.

I've always liked Lionel(since 1965)and will continue to purchase their products second hand. They have clearly left the common guy in the dust pricewise. On my retiree budget there's no room for 1-2 thousand dollar toy trains!

I have heard of 3RD Rail but not Golden Gate Depot. Do they offer rolling stock or just limited run locomotives? You would do well to expand your interest to include GGD. They are the same importer as 3rd Rail but the focus is on scale passenger and freight cars plus some other scale things. The combined enterprise now includes ERR for TMCC control/sound boards that Lionel unaccountably wanted to ditch/abandon.
As Emile/BCC says the price gap between 3rd Rail/GGD and Lionel has all but disappeared although (1) the former’s focus is on full O scale models and (2) it’s true quality stuff. Downside is the prices of some of the passenger cars are such that full sets are way beyond an average enthusiast’s budget. I have some that I sourced in the secondary market. I signed up for their newsletter

Lionel lost me as a customer after Legacy came out and engines were failing left and right. MTH lost me even before then when they moved to China. I will not spend my money on inferior Chinese goods for both questionable quality and ethical reasons. The two dozen or so big scale steam locomotives I kept were all made in South Korea by Samhongsa and Korea Brass. These have all held up well. I've been buying lots of beautiful Prewar Lionel, American Flyer and Ives standard gauge and O gauge trains. Prices have come down to the point where they are affordable again. I've been able to buy more high end Postwar than I ever dreamed and I'm spending less per year than when I was buying new MTH and Lionel. These beautiful trains run great and will last and last!

Ricky, If you convince guys to buy the Lionel post war equipment, then the buying will drive the prices up for us conventional Lionel train enthusiasts and price us out of the market. Alfred

Alfred Many more of those wonderful trains were made then than the silly built-to-order junk made now. The Prewar,Postwar and MPC/Fundimensions/LTI Era trains are falling gradually in price. There's way more product available than demand as more and more collections and hoards are coming to market. Forty years ago when the prices were skyrocketing beyond what a young professional raising a family could afford, I'd never dream I'd own a 2373 Canadian Pacific ,Congressional set or a 746. Owning standard gauge was unobtainium then. I strongly believe that in a decade, ALL trains will be crazy cheap!

I know we all have been complaining about Lionel quality issues (and with good reason). But I recently learned that MTH's 1 year warranty starts when the item ships from their facility. So if an item sits in the train shop for 2 years and then you buy it, you are SOL.
How about that, sportsfans?

Yep, while Lionel’s terms are a little longer, but they started the no warranty on new old stock items.
