I thought I would start a new thread to show progress on my Boston & Maine F Unit project. The idea is to take this model in need of TLC. And turn it into a model of this beautiful engine.

Progress Update - August 20, 2022 1. Clean up is going well. I used Walt's tip to use isopropyl alcohol to strip the paint. Worked like a charm! Photos of the stripped engine to come soon. Next will be a primer coat. 2. Mechanical is not going as well. My plan was to use some spare parts from these engines that I got for less than $50 on eBay (for the pair). Of course, the motors on these are too large to fit, so back to the drawing board. Should have known. Silver lining is that I now have 2 new switchers that I can bring back to life and enjoy. ***If anyone has a lead on post-war (I wold also be fine with something from the 70s/80s) F3 trucks with motors at a reasonable price, please let me know. One is fine, I don't need this to be a dual motor. Working or not. eBay prices for these to me are outrageous.

Here is the engine shell after the alcohol treatment (for the shell, not for me :-) ). Some stubborn areas to clean off but with some elbow grease and a toothbrush I should be able to take care of that. Then we go to primer followed by red coat.

Ive been thinking about the stripes and lettering. Detail painting is not my forte.
My current idea is to make a template on the computer using sticky backed printer paper. Once I’ve got the strips just right I will stick it onto the shell and use an exacto knife to mark the out line. Then remove the sticky paper and slowly and carefully paint in the yellow.
Does anyone have a better idea? Does someone make decals of these stripes in the right size for a post war engine?

Adam,
When I did this double yellow and crossing,I first put down blue painters tape, then printed it out to scale on a large shipping label, then stuck it on top the painters tape and cut it out with a exactor knife.
You might also try these people on ETSY

Not much progress today. Primer coat is drying. I plan to do a coat of red tomorrow. I still need to figure out the mechanicals parts. This was clearly a dummy so I need to find a powered truck with motor for it.

Nice find! Thanks! Of course they are out of stock. Use Hi-Ball Graphics a sponsor here. Take a picture of the out of stock set, blow it up to O scale size and send it to them to make you a set of decals. I've done this to get Decals made.
