Now I knew what I was getting here, it needs a lot of work but did have it moving earlier.
Here is his description, " Lionel 408e bild-a-loco motors. William's reproduction stamped on Frame. some of the wheels are cracked . I put power to it makes a noise but does not run some of the lights light up. Has Lionel 408E stamped on side plates? Selling for Part or?restoration paint looks very nice some chips on frame. What you see is what you get. Thanks for looking." Postwar E-Unit, needs cleaning and probably rebuilding, needs two wheels for sure, I have 2 so that is good. I will have to figure what I want to put behind it.

Well I took it apart and sprayed the E-unit with CRC and manually worked it some, it's not switching but at least I have forward motion and it is strong. So I got it working anyway, that makes me happy. So need to clear the one complete loop I have and run it some, so it can stretch it's legs That will be later.

I put the shell on and had a short. So removed the shell but left everything hooked up. still had short, unhooked lights and away it went, got brave and threw the E-Unit lever and lo and behold I now have F-N-R-N-F it's completely working, just need to figure short with the lights. And which lights, the two head lights or the 4 lower lights, two each direction. I just bought the passenger cars that go with it, there like 18" long each also. So now I have and

Great looking set! I love the colors. Good work with finding the short. Process of elimination works every time.

Yeah but now I have to figure exactly where the short is, in the headlights or the running lights as I call them. ( the 2 lower lights at each end)

Yeah but now I have to figure exactly where the short is, in the headlights or the running lights as I call them. ( the 2 lower lights at each end) Those are truly beautiful models, even though tinplate is not my thing.
I wish I could help in terms of finding the short but I don't know how models of this vintage are wired. All the bulbs in question seem to be incandescent so I assume that they are wired straight to track power and possibly in series rather than parallel? If so, I don't know how a short would happen without blowing them!

If so, I don't know how a short would happen without blowing them! They are wired basically to track power, The two head lights are wired together, and the four running lights as I call them are wired together. Just going to need to take top off put it in neutral and hook each set separately till I get a short, then figure where the short is. For an engine I was told didn't work, I'm tickled to have it running. Still need to fix the wheels, but waiting on them as friend who did some other repairs for me has them, he's going to return them to me along with some other parts I have sent him.
