Team, I know there was a debate about using Mega Steam in Lionel and MTH products and there may or not be data pointing to the fact one is better than the other. But I wanted to let everyone know that I have been using Mega Steam per the Manufactures direction since 2004 and there has been NO issues with my smoke units. For the best performance. Do NOT let the smoke fluid run out and as your engines run around the layout. Confirm your smoke unit is turned off when the locomotive is sitting in a siding unattended. Also do NOT fill the unit when its hot, this will cause the fluid to crystalize as it touches the resistor. Also follow the prescribed amount of fluid as directed by the manufacture and you should be FINE.
My best practice is to fill the smoke unit hours before you use it to avoid fluid burping out of the batten while running the unit.
Also, do not flip the locomotive over if you just filled the smoke unit.... your pants will thank you.

How long do you wait for the loco to cool down ? Thanks. 10 to 15 minutes should be fine. Just avoid adding when its red hot and when it ran out of fluid. Best to shut it off and wait a bit

Never thought about it having issues when filled on the run. Guess I'll need to stop that practice and give them a cool down period prior to refilling them.

I've been using Mega Steam for years in my Lionel engines. I put a tiny bit down the smoke stack and it smokes great. A Lionel person told me when you put it in a new engine, you should put about 15 drops to saturate the padding after that only two or three.
