No idea! I've noticed with my iPhone images in portrait format, or at a weird angle they default rotated. The only way I have figured out to correct it is using the "Save for web and devices" function in Photoshop.

The reason your photo would appear this way is because the photo was taken vertically and the image file itself is in this orientation. Most digital cameras (And Phones) have a rotation sensor which writes an orientation EXIF tag into the file that tells the software how to turn the photo for display. To fix it: Open the photo in any current photo software (rotate if necessary) and then "Save As" in jpeg file. The orientation tag will be corrected.

The pictures always come out correct when i use my tablet. I'll have to try a few pics with my phone horizontal.

If you are using an iPhone and iPad and the photo shows correctly but still turns sideways on the Forum it is due to the Apple orientation file. It is state-of-the-art and most websites (Forums) are unable to read the newest file extension compression. Saving the photo in most current software changes the extension in a way that websites are able to decode. It isn’t that websites are behind, it’s just that Apple in constantly innovating in the camera/photo area. Automatic updates mean that even older iPhones are likely running state-of-the-art file formats.

Emile even though I am a Apple iPhone tech I stay clear of iPhones and Apple devices. I was all Apple till the 7 came along and all the updates and issues that came with. For personal use I have a Samsung Note 10,LG tablet and Dell laptop. I still have not found a setting in my phone that will help with the sideways issue. At least the pictures still open correctly! Lol

This is for apple users on pictures:
When I take pictures on my I phone, I either email or connect my phone to my iMac or MacBook. Either way I export them (from pictures or email) to documents as jpg. Then they can be uploaded and posted. Sometimes before they are posted I notice they are sideways, I delete the upload, go back to the picture in documents, rotate it once to the correct position and upload again and it is fine. Also you can crop a picture and reduce the size and it will post correctly. Since the size limit was changed that hasn't been necessary.

Lol It's not a setting on your phone, it's how you hold it. To keep from having to re-orient pictures in the future, hold your phone horizontally with the camera to the left.

Not sure what part of this thread you're questioning, Denny.

Some computer based photo viewers will now automatically rotate the image for viewing. This is a setting you can disable in some software (but not all). This on both the Mac and PC. So if this is happening automatically, you will never see the orientation issue. If it's in the settings, turn it off. if the image comes up sideways you rotate the image (not the view) and then save it.
But keep in mind, not all software has this as an option and will always auto rotate the view w/o doing the same to the picture file information.

Sorry if I missed it but how is that happening? The photo file that you upload has orientation data from the time the photo was taken. It uploads exactly as it is saved. The posted photo file is shown as a thumbnail of the file contents including the orientation of the image at the time it was taken. When you click on the image, it opens in a new tab. The device (computer, tablet or phone sees it as an image in the browser and auto-rotates it for viewing.
