For those who either have no woodworking skills or do not feel like hauling and lifting heavy lumber. Here is a great "back saving" way to have fast and easy benchwork. These are plastic modular shelving units available from Lowes, Home Depot, etc. I usually go with 3 shelves high for perfect height and in black color to be less visually intrusive, just like wooden benchwork. Have purchased many of these and never looked back, just place your foam on top of them and glue down with woodland scenics foam tac glue: www.homedepot.com/p/Sandusky-56-in-H-x-36-in-W-x-24-in-D-4-Shelf-Black-Plastic-Shelving-Unit-PS362456-4B/301364195

Such a smart and easy way to build a layout benchwork. I will need to keep this in mind for future builds.

How does the shelving work for under table train storage? I don't use them for benchwork, but they do fit under mianne bench work. I had shelving units collecting spider webs and dust so I decided to have them hold extra trains. I have it tilted a little and added a stop at the back. I cut, drilled, and wired tied the wood panels and then screwed the track. I can store 21-24 scale pieces of rolling stock 13" on this.

This is a great building solution, and it provides lots of possibilities for under layout storage.

I am set with my current layout. It is 'project board' framed with 1" x 2" pine. It is supported using saw horses. I am not likely to do any more building. I like the shelving idea. I The tubular track is screwed onto the board. I did not consider any sound and vibration damping material - that would have been a good idea. I note that you have track on foam. What other material could be used under track if it is going to be on wood? Alfred

I put 1" foam (used in the housing industry and comes in 4x8 sheets (Blue and NO FOIL BACKING)) on top of my plywood. Damp-in's sound, easy to stick trees and scenery into, easily cut for creeks, streams, lakes, ditches etc. and easy to work with. Light weight also.
