I just love the 'whistle' and 'cylinder' effects! Do you guys vent your layout spaces? A long time ago, i turned off the smoke on my engines and really haven't turned it on since - my layout is in the basement. The smoke was bothering other family members. I have a temporary carpet layout and as it's in a family room my full volume smoke sessions tend to be limited to minutes. I find that our antiquated aircon (wall units) tends to make stack smoke lie flat along the engine's top and so it goes off for these short running sessions. As I have one engine, an early Legacy FEF-3, that produces smoke rings at slow speed I like to see them. My practice also means that the smoke residue disperses in a fairly short time, but I only use Christmas pine scented smoke fluid and the family generally puts up with it very nobly - for some seasonal cheer!

I've never seen an engine blow smoke rings - that would be fun to see!

I've never seen an engine blow smoke rings - that would be fun to see! I don’t have a video on hand or I’d show you beautiful toy train smoke rings. The smoke unit on this FEF-3 is a 6 ohm unit Lionel no longer uses (or replaces) and it was prone to blowing the AC regulator - another engine referred to above that is the same vintage (c. 2008 I think) has the same thing. Anyway, I’ll never forget the first time I put Ol’ Reliable on the track and saw what billowed out of its stack - unbelievable. My MTH UP 80 coal turbine is known in the family as Ol’ Smoky - for obvious reasons.

My best smokers are MTH Railking steam engines. The diesels may be great smokers but I have the smoke turned off. I don't like smoking diesels. They don't look right to my eyes.

However, I just thought I'd mention that Brother LAZ put the Lionel (NOT MTH) GE Evo on another thread recently, and if you want eco-friendly and/or prototypical modern diesel smoke operation, it's the best ever made, IMHO.

I saw that engine and I think it's really cool. I think Lionel did a great job on it.
My first diesel with smoke was a Railking RS1. I tried it but I didn't like it. It's the only diesel that I've run with smoke. When I put a new diesel on the track the first thing I do after adding it to the DCS remote is shut the smoke off.
The only reason I mentioned smoking diesels is because some guys mentioned diesels as their best smokers. I thought it needed a little explanation why I specifically listed steam engines though maybe it didn't.
I understand that some guys really love smoking diesels. I think that's cool but it's not for me.

I think all O gauge engines, steam or diesels should smoke, and even cabooses , they did and do on a real railroad.

My 2026 or 2037 will blow smoke rings. Oldtimers has set in and I cannot remember which one. I'll run some test once I make it back into the traincave.
I have one caboose with the smoke option. It didn't smoke all that well and I was afraid of burning up the smoke unit. So smoke option is set to off until I need to show it off to a visitor.

It's a tie between my MTH Premier Blue Comet (converted to PS3) and my Williams brass Niagara (also converted to PS3 and smoke unit upgraded to fan-driven MTH). They are hits with visitors and see regular service on my layout.
