Hi GUYZ, Here is a little poll that I was wondering what you all do with smoke?

With our place, Corner Field Model Railroad Museum, there will always be at least one train running that will have smoke.

Me too Brian. I have a lot of different scents. I just bought a smoke generator and attached it to my BBQ snack. Then I mixed BBQ and Wood Stove so it smells like cooking BBQ. I have Frying Bacon for the diner, but I need another smoke generator. Attachments:

My train room is on the smaller side and running smoke fills it up quick. I run smoke occasionally primarily to ensure that the smoke is still working on the engines.

On newer engines I turn smoke off, older engines I just don't put the pills in them and I do not have any liquid, It actually bothers me, ( the smoke) I use to smoke 3 packs a day. ( that was 18 years ago) I can put up with it, if I'm at a show or should I ever go somewhere someone is using it, but I prefer no smoke.

Toy train smoke is just the best thing! I use scented, either Christmas Pine or Wood Smoke. This is the latest smoker I have got, a Lionel VL GS5 with cylinder smoke as well as main stack and whistle. The Southern Pacific "steamboat" whistle puts everything else I can think of in the shade. And of course the whistle smoke feature itself just encourages ramping up the output to the max, which my family puts up with - very nobly:

I am in the same situation as Adam. I have a small room for my trains, so I only run the smoke to make sure it works. I run it when I first get an engine and before I put one up for sale. I very, very occasionally run smoke otherwise.
Emile, When trying to quit, cold turkey is the only way to go!

This is a really good question Laz. It will be interesting to see the results. I would not mind seeing some type of survey related to sound.
Thanks for starting this.

Now, if I were going to go for absolute realism (down to the air pollution, dirt, smell, and possible bad health outcomes) on the early 1950's version of the Panhandle, I'd replace the smoke units in my Lionel Industrial smokestacks with fan-driven ones. My Open Hearth would billow multi-colored clouds of particulate-laden filth and everything would have a coating of graphite.
We're not going to go there, but I will run smoke in steamers, diesels, steel mills, and other spots (campfires, buildings).

I had an exhaust fan installed over the layout. It does okay, but I need to have another one installed. It's a exhaust fan for a bathroom.

That’s a god idea Denny, but I’m planning to move the layout to a different area of the house some day. I want to go a bit larger. Trying not to spend too much money on the current t area.
