Thanks Wood. I’ve learned a lot from the books regarding LIRR history. I’ve also visited a local university that has a collection of pictures and hand written drawings of the branch line. They were created by Bob Emery, a conductor who worked for the LIRR. Mr. Emery also drew the rest of the LIRR, by hand, it’s a quite impressive collection. When i visited the university, i had to handle the photos and drawings with white gloves. I’ve also been in touch with two local historians, Dave Keller and Steve Lynch. Steve also runs a website for all things regarding the LIRR here: www.trainsarefun.com/lirr/lirrcontents.htmI’m trying to get the feel of a scene by grabbing what I believe to be key features or structures. I will have to scratch build some structures as they are very unique. The three stations, two towers for sure, and the freight house in the yard. Andy

Really nice build for the loading dock. The height is just right. The finishing touches you applied are over the top good.

Andy, the loading dock looks very realistic, just the right amount of aging and weathering. The LIRR boxcar looks right at home.
About 30 or 40 years ago I had a book on the LIRR that I loaned to a friend and never got back. If I remember correctly it was Steel Rails to the Sunrise by Ron Ziel. I could be wrong about both the author and title but it was a history of the railroad and had lots of photos.

Thank you Brian, I don’t have a set “formula” in mind. I just try and think of what the environment would have been, proximity to the track, what kind of wear, etc, and I try to weather accordingly, or at least what my impression is. Joe you are absolutely right that is the title and author. I have that book, I’ll take a picture of the cover and post it. Ron was a prolific author in his day. I had the good fortune of having a few conversations with him. If I remember correctly, the bulk of his collection is at the Queens Public Library main branch. I need to go there one of these days.

Andy, really like the freight dock... Dennis Brennan kit? Looks familiar and also our first build. Very good instructions as I remember which were needed at that point.
The books are great source material and interesting reading.
Thanks for continuing to update this interesting thread. It is fun to follow.

Thank you Bill, yes the dock is from Dennis Brennan. Can you post your dock? Yes, the instructions were very detailed, and yes, I needed that too. The books have been a tremendous resource. Glad you enjoy following the build.

Andy, you have accumulated a wonderful library for the LIRR. Should serve you well as you build your railroad empire.

Dennis is one clever guy. Not surprised that this is his loading dock. He was the photographer for our CTT article last December, so we got to spend some quality time with him.

Thanks Brian, I also enjoy learning about the historical aspect. And I do refer to these books often. And the fact that I still live in the area helps too. I go visit every once in awhile and take pictures.

Brian, I've spoken with Dennis on several occasions. Very friendly and he has great products. Thanks Joe, I'm fortunate that so much was written about the LIRR.

Andy, you are doing some outstanding modeling. The bridge, roadwork and sidewalks look fabulous.
