Jake, this year's layout is fabulous. When I enlarge the photos there is so much to see. You and your crew have put a lot of work into this layout and created something spectacular. It's a Christmas treat for those living in your area.

Thanks guys. There's definitely plenty to look at. We were running out of ideas as to where to place figurines and such by the time we finished.
The theater mainly shows "classic" movies. As much as we can, we use our carbon arc film projectors, but we also have a nice digital projector for the shows that are no longer available on film. We've been getting into some more recent classics (if they can be considered that) such as the Polar Express, Harry Potter and other such popular movies to appeal to the younger crowd. We also occasionally host various festivals such as our upcoming cartoon festival, a Three Stooges festival (my favorite, and also one I do the planning for) and occasionally other groupings of shows.

Jake could give you a more detailed answer but most movies are classic's from the past. As guest of Jakes and his project partner we have been treated to a couple of silent movies with the organ playing just like days gone by. lol Jake jumped in while I was 2 finger typing.

Terrific video of your Christmas 2019 presentation. The music you chose works well.
Thanks for posting it, Jake. Good luck with the crowds that view it during the Christmas season

That video made me feel like a kid again. So many colors, whimsy and, of course, trains. Fantastic music selection as well. I know it’s a lot of work putting this together, but I am sure it brings joy to so many people . Very well done and thank you!

I enjoyed spotting the little details put into the layout. I believe I even seen a Detroit Tigers sign. Great job Jake.

Thanks guys! I'm very happy with how this year's layout turned out (so far) and there's still a little more to add to it this week.
RJ, I received about a dozen Lionel billboard frames from one of the guys who used to do the predecessor display at the theater. They used to change them regularly to showcase upcoming shows at the theater. I don't have the time to go there on a regular basis, so I decided to print off various advertisements or logos for Detroit themed things and install them. There are a lot of other fun things I hide around the layout that people like to look for. Some of our regulars have caught on to this and try to locate where we moved them to each year.

Thanks for sharing Jake. Outstanding scenery all around. How many man hours of work do you think so far?

Thanks Andy.
I'm not really sure of the man hour count this year. I'll have to consult our volunteer sign in book next time I'm at the theater. In the past we've put well over 150 hours in between the two of us. I'm not sure we were quite into it that much this year. We usually worked one 6-1/2 hour session a week in the evening after work starting towards the end of October. The last week before we unveiled the layout I was there nearly every day working on things, including one full day that I took a vacation day from work to help wrap things up. I'm pretty good at procrastinating and the proximity of Menards and many other minor maintenance tasks at the theater itself had their moments of distraction from our progress...

I figured it's time to make a post in regards to this year's Redford Theatre Christmas display, or the lack thereof. As many know, I have been constructing an increasingly elaborate Christmas train and village display at the Redford Theatre in Detroit, MI for about the past 10 years. This past weekend, our theater hosted its first movie inside the building since we shut down in March due to Covid with a full house at our current reduced capacity. We had a couple of reasonably successful outdoor shows in our parking lot to keep some cash coming in before then. During our discussions about the reopening of the building, I began pondering the feasibility of this years display and decided that it's going to be the first year I've had a "break" from doing the layout since I took over the task way back in 2011. Between difficulty staffing the theater's normal volunteer positions, the ability to route patrons through for viewing a layout with social distancing, and also the fact that I'm moving to a new apartment during the time that I'd normally be building the layout while also working full time, it just seemed like a good year to take a breath and prepare for next years display.
All that said, depending on how my move goes, this will likely be the first year that I'll have a somewhat more elaborate home layout for the holidays since much of my village and train collections are usually in service on the theater display between December and the end of February.
