This is one of the Lionel auto carriers with better vehicles. There are two Studebakers on the bottom and two tow trucks on the top. I may put different vehicles on the carrier but these will do for now.

You could take those original Lionel autos and crush them. Put them in a gondola. That would look great and authentic. Good job on the boxcars, but there is better freight to put in them.

The floor looks good, did you glue it in? For a more realistic floor you could use strip wood from Michaels and other places. The diecast cars will always look better. Dave I've written several times on this forum on how I make flooring for cars without them, and inexpensively. Here's a car that had no flooring, just bare metal painted black.

Yep it works! When my son was younger and used to play with the trains more, I notice all my cars on the layout were disappearing... then as I notice running my trains as I started and stopped them an odd clunk would emulate from my 50' Lionel Autobox cars... sure enough every car of the 30 car train had two cars in it!

Yes I like the MTH/Rail king auto loaders and flats with cars as they are a better quality than most of the Lionel loads.

Big difference Joe,and they now look 110% better. You did good. Thanks Walt. This was a very easy modification with a big payoff for very little effort.

I glued the floor down. If I put a floor on a flat car or a gondola I would use wood but it’s hard to see the floor of a boxcar as it’s rolling by so I think the printed floor is fine.

Joe I'm in tear down mode, to rebuild, but I have 7 of the double decker car carriers by Rail-King. And I have 1 by K-Line, Then I have 10 Flats with 2 cars on each by Rail-King and 2 by K-Line. I bought them for use of the cars on my layout, but I have way more than I need with out them I think, so I will have a car lot some were and park some of these behind it like there there to be unloaded to the car lot. May have to make a dead end with a ramp as in unloading cars. That will make a great scene on the new layout. I also have a few RailKing flat cars with cars that I bought for the cars. I’m using the cars on the layout so I plan to add different loads to the flat cars.

good move Joe. Diecast cars look much better.
now for your next project
This is how they did it in the old days. Thanks, and thanks for the great photos. The Lionel boxcars are too small to hold four cars and the ends don’t open but that would make a very cool scene on a bigger layout.

The '59 Dodges look MUCH better, plus they are the same brand and year. It drives me nuts to see '51 Buicks with '55 Fords. I know just what you mean. One of my RailKing carriers came with two 1953 Cadillacs and two 1949 Fords. I can’t imagine why MTH didn’t put either four Caddys or four Fords on the car.

" These are the two MTH Railking Auto Loaders I have. They use Ertl cars that are much, much nicer than the plastic cars Lionel uses. Actually, the Railking car is way nicer overall but I had one of the Lionel cars when I was a boy and they hold a nostalgic place in my heart so I needed a few of them."You sure make the point with your photos, Joe. Thanks Brian. I agree with the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words.😊

Thanks Wood. The Lionel Evans cars resemble the real ones from back then but I agree that the RailKing cars are much better. I’m thinking that when the train is rolling by it won’t be obvious that the cars inside the boxcars are such crappy models. To the best of my knowledge double door boxcars were auto carriers so putting the crappy cars in them makes sense to me.

Walt, I remember you showing how you did that. I’m going to find that thread and add a floor to one of my flat cars. The floor in that boxcar looks great.

I remember doing stuff like that when I was a kid. It made running trains more fun since they were actually carrying freight.😊
