I recently acquired this model for a great price. It is new old stock mid 90's production. Its my first MTH loco and I'm wondering what the thoughts are on running this with a CW80 transformer

Congratulations! I like AS616s. I had a CW80 from an old Polar Express set that I used to run MTH engines of that vintage. It did okay with one engine. As I recall I would overload when I tried running MTH F7 ABA, two powered A units. I sold the CW80 with the conventional PE set when I bought a LionChief PE set with snow on the car roofs, so now my memory is a bit hazy.

I'm just running it with a simple loop and no accessories. Was a little rough when I started it but has smoothed out somewhat. A lot of years on the shelf.

A lot of years on the shelf the grease may have hardened up. I had same and did smooth out also. But from that time on I always checked grease and if hardened removed and replaced and oiled. Had a FM H10 that had sat on shelve for 4 years and was cranky and hardly moved because the grease had hardened up. I learned to check engines that had sat or bought used to checked grease and oiled before placing on track. I agree with poster about upgrading the CW80.

Tires and battery must be changed, possibly the speaker as well if it flaking.

Nice locomotive. The Erie had the four axle version, as did the PRSL. I am considering repainting a couple. As far as a BCR, here is a link to what you can use in a PS1 locomotive.... www.jandwelectronics.com/bcr

I would have preferred PRR instead of UP but at the price I couldn't pass it up!
