I picked up a used Lionel C&O K-19 recently. It had a few issues with the sounds and structure. When I first tested it, it shorted my power supply, tripping the breaker. After some investigation, I found the pilot/cow catcher was bent down and touching the center rail. Being cast brass, it didn’t take well to being bent back, but I repositioned it, leaving a couple tears in the casting. Then the next issue was the R2LC board wasn’t working. I installed an extra and it started working in TMCC mode. The sounds were not working right still. After some experiments with tender swaps, I finally determined the tetherless connection from the tender side wasn’t working. I placed an order for a new R2LC board, tender drawbar with the IR transmitter and a new pilot. All electronics were installed and the new pilot put in place. I installed a YLB before closing up the tender. Thanks to my friends, Pete(Norton) and John(GRJ) for helping me trouble shoot and fix the electrical issues. Here is the locomotive. A C&O K-19. The C&O had five of them and they used them for pulling special named trains up into the mid 1950’s. I admit I wasn’t much of a C&O fan, but the looks of this huge Pacific appeals to me. I picked up a MTH C&O express car, RPO and a set of five cars to go with it. It will make a nice looking train when it is all together... Tom

Glad you get it fixed. One of my favorite engines too.

Nice engine. Should make a nice train.

This should make a terrific passenger train for your new layout (when you get started on it).

Tom Nice looking Pacific and Vandy tender Tom, even if it IS a C & O. 😅 I too, like Pacifics and Vandys, so much so, that I occasionally swap out my Lionel UP Vandy tender which came with a 2-8-0 Consolidated, with the Lionel NYC style square type tender, that came with the Pacific, just so I'll have a Pacific steam locomotive mated with a Vandy tender. Both are tethered tenders and when I tether the Vandy to the Pacific, everything still runs OK, including the whistle, bell, and smoke. But in TMCC when I reverse on the CAB1 then stop, the tender coupler opens and disconnects the train. So, I don't swap out the tenders very often. Plus the engine and tender numbers don't match. 🤭
I like the looks of your C & O Pacific and the huge Vandy tender.

Thanks guys. Someday I hope this engine can stretch its legs like George’s engine. The layout will come soon I hope!
Thanks Vern. Your tender actually looks just like mine, except for the silver handrails and the oily tank instead of the coal bunker.
Interesting that you can swap tenders with tethers. This engine has the “non tethered” drawbar using the IR lights to communicate between the two. I used a tender from a UP 4-12-2 To determine that the C&O tender was defective. The C&O engine ran fine with the UP tender. Just the sounds were different.

Certainly well worth the effort, Tom. With help from those guys you can't go wrong.
I tried holding my limitations to Hudson's or smaller sized steam but broke that rule ages ago. What really figures highly to me about your Pacific is the crowning Elesco. Any engine with one gets my attention, like the loco on my last excursion had. CN U2g 6218. A recent pic of it in Trains reminds me that the excursion jubilee comes up next next March.
The tender swapping is restricted to tmcc for tmcc and Legacy for legacy. Something about the serial data being incompatible. With the large variety of engines with the IR tethers from both catagories the mix and match possibilities are endless.
Keep up the great work, Tom. Sharp looking Pacific!

Thanks Bruce. The Elesco feed water heater is a favorite of mine.
A old friend of mine recently sold a CN steam engine to a group in Canada. I think it is a 2-8-2. He had it stored in Buffalo somewhere. I recall it had an Elesco on it.
He was big on the old 6060 trips back in the 60’s or 70’s...

The GW set has always been a favorite of mine. I wish at the time Lionel would have given it a better whistle. The details on this engine and the heavyweight cars make it an awesome set.

Beauty C&O GW Tom!! I just watched George's video of his GW. More importantly Cheryl really liked this engine too. I think she's onto me now. When I see a steam engine I like I always ask her if she's intrigued by it in any way. Heh, Heh! I know you have done a first rate job on this one to Tom. Like us, your layout will come. Gary.

Good looking engine Tom. Glad you got the bugs worked out. Laz's video shows it's a definate keeper.

It sounds like the engine was dropped or maybe damaged in shipping causing the pilot to get bent. applying power provided a nice path to ground, thus blowing the boards that don't really have any short circuit protection.
It makes me think that from now on when I get a new engine or anything with a circuit board I'm going to put an ohm meter on the pickup and frame and check check for shorts.
Glad everything worked out for you....

Thanks guys.
The power board was blown. The bent pilot was likely a symptom of dropping the engine. I doubt it happened in shipping, but I don’t know for sure.
I expect issues when I buy stuff, especially when the seller doesn’t test them. It is definitely a keeper. It’s all back together, cleaned up and being displayed.
Gary, I highly recommend getting one! They are a plain USRA 4-6-2, but the added appliances really make it stand out. The huge tender adds to it too...
