I got some plastic shelves from Menards and put carpets tiles with sticky backs on them so the cars won't roll and some storage shelves and put track on them. The rest of my rolling stock and locos are in the train yard. Some are on top of my old bass guitar speakers.

I use a couple of bookcases under the layout that are not for display, just storage.

I rearrange my shelves on the back wall aas I call it. This is how they where
I took the trains off bottom and put them on top and vise versa so now you can see the engines that where up on top shelf.

The short answer from me is, trains 'n other stuff. Some years back, we had a wall unit built around a large TV inherited from a former owner. Each side is fitted with six glass shelves and there are LED lighting strips running from top to bottom. One side is shown in the photo. There are acrylic "steps" so each train shelf is three models deep. Only the upper shelves were specifically designed for trains but there has been some creeping annexation, which fortunately no one else in the household has objected to. There is no floor space for a layout so I put a lot of effort into building up rather than out/across. This side houses Santa Fe, SP, UP, MKT Texas Special and Rock Island.

Joe,
The situation here was tackled similarly. I bought mdf shelving that I cut to fit openings under a storage yard. The attached roller drawer hardware lets me stack shelves closer for more storage per square inch. Still, as the picture shows, there's never enough storage.
The entire layout area was a total remake of the original construction to also accommodate ear candy.

Bruce, the pull out shelves are a great idea. They allow you to store a lot more trains in the same space. I used the bookcases since I had them and they fit perfectly under the layout. You have a good size collection of record albums.

The cabinet is a nice way to display your trains. Do you occasionally set up a Carpet Central layout so you can run them?

But a 'round the main room floor layout is generally only possible at the holiday season. Or if I have the house to myself for a while, as I do now.
