All you guys have me beat. 90% of my collection is in the boxes stored in my basement...soon to be under a layout. I have a few favorites displayed on my yet unfinished mantle in the living room. In the display case are a MTH PRR I1sa Decapod, a MTH NKP Berkshire and a 3rd Rail Erie S4 class Berkshire. The top is what ever trains fit my mood for the week or two. Currently it is a MTH Erie Russian Decapod pulling a mixture of factory and custom painted cars. The caboose is a wooden Erie hack I found on eBay... Tom A very attractive display, Tom. 👍 Thanks Vern. The flower prints on the wall are silkscreen prints made by my late Mother. She was an Roycroft Artisan and locally noted artist in and around Buffalo, NY.... Tom

Display is a sorely absent commodity in my world. Storage rules the house.
Although O, these Moguls cant travel the 3 rail empire. In back is an American Models kit from the late 40's, modified by a previous owner into an oil burner. I found this at a yard sale in Orange, Ca about 35 years ago. Up front is a Balboa On3 CSP&D Mogul built by Cooke in 1884. A recent purchase needing cosmetic attention, after it was found to operate well ( motor in the tender ) I added a decoder and the results were very satisfactory.

You know Wood, at second glance, I’m glad you decided to have the shelf lighting installed in this section. It looks attractive, proportionate, and not overwhelming. Nice going. 😉 Thanks Vern, I am happy with it too. It certainly looks better then the underside of the layout. I do not consider myself a collector. For me it's operating trains on the layout. But this shelf kind of put me a little bit into the collector status. Maybe that is my next move in the hobby, Who knows...

How awesome! Love the brass. So Orange, CA, 35 years ago? Have you been there since? The City of Orange as well as all of Orange County have changed so much, you'd hardly recognize them today.

Had lots of trouble with TIUs lately, one had the serial port go out ending my WIFI operations last fall, and the replacement TIU was the latest and greatest with the USB port, and it appears now that the Variable 1 channel is not working correctly.
Thank goodness I have a spare TIU and will make the swap after work today, then I will get both of the clinkers repaired, as I am only a 30 minutes drive from MTH headquarters.

Vern,
The town circle had always been an attraction for us touristy types and it's charm seemed to have survived despite gentrification. A friend had an antique shop there, Ruby's, back when I was last there in '03. Since first visiting the area in 1974 I have enjoyed it's urban environment. The ability to easily escape that scene to a rural desert landscape, a mountainous ski resort or a sandy subtropical beach is profoundly ideal in comparison to living here in the northeast.

Very interesting, Bruce. Having lived 40 years near sea level and within 15 miles of the ocean (California and Hawaii), I got used to the ocean. Now in landlocked Utah since retiring in 2011, I'm still trying to adjust to the higher, dryer air, and no ocean. But I couldn't afford to retire in expensive Hawaii and Utah has plenty of wide open spaces and a low cost of living. Besides, it's Union Pacific and Amtrak country, so I'm happy. 😀

Because of my flight helmet and other WW2 to Vietnam collections, my wife will not let me put up another shelf in the house. She says, "the house will sink or lean if I add another shelve". You all are lucky, mine are under layout or in closets.

This is my DIY Wall-o-Trains that I built it out of scrap wood and some old track about a year ago. By basement walls are made of a material that doesn't allow me to hang anything too heavy on it (but a great temperature and sound insulator), so needed something freestanding. As you can see, I have just about out grown it.

With all the railroad centric activity that has happened of late in Utah, who could ask for better? It has only been lately that a few UP pieces have entered the roster. Nothing new in the box but deals I just couldn't let slide. These bones have lost their wanderlust which is natural after living in the same general area forever. I have managed to keep a little backwoods environment smack dead in the middle of urban development. Bruce

It’s like the “Which came first chicken or egg“ puzzle. You built shelves to hold what you had bought, was under the train board, piled up?, and couldn’t be easily reached. Then you put the trains on the shelves, added lights, and it looks great, is easier to utilize, is more attractive, etc. You bought nothing more or at least didn’t admit it (shelves are an excuse to buy more) and you are a “Little Bit,” collector. Sounds to us that you have been a closet collector for awhile. That classification includes under layout, attic, and even in a closet. It is several steps above the “Little Bit,” classification. 🙄😁😎 Gotta have fun. How many more shelves are you considering?

You know I made a statement back when I had like 3 or 4 shelves on two walls, " once the shelves are full, everything else is going to be sold. Well there's one small problem ( small as I see it, big as wife see's it ) I'm still buying and under the table is full with empty boxes and trains that will never fit on the shelves due to what's there already.

Ok Bill and Paula, If I am coming out of the closet, I will admit I am looking at the back lower half of the layout which is also 12' wide. Considered curtains for coverage, but I cannot put trains on my basement wall and I do have a "few" more in boxes..... so maybe another shelf. They do accent the room and the small grandkids love the shelves because they can touch and see the details. I reaffirm, I am only a "Little Bit" of a collector... Now close the closet door..
