With my dismal failure with my electronic pursuits, coupled with the heavy rains and lousy weather here in NJ, I went back to working on some freight cars today. I have about 8 to work on. Waiting for some paint for some of the projects. The tank car is a Lionel 8000 gallon tanker I repainted and detailed with stirrups. It will be painted up in a livery for a local NJ chemical company that went out of business some 20 years ago. The boxcar is a Atlas 50’ car with modern doors. This was an undecorated 2 rail car I converted to three rail. It will be painted for the Peoria and Eastern when the P&E was a subsidiary of the Penn Central. The paint is drying now. I will have to wait until tomorrow to start decaling... Tom

Looking forward to following another of your great modeling jobs Tom!
I'm the opposite. The electronics I can usually handle. Painting, decaling, etc. is where I need a lot of practice.

Good start, can't wait to see the tank car all finished. Bad weather is a great time to finish projects.

Okay, next step... The Atlas car have very fragile details, especially the stirrups. So I reassembled the car with the under frame and trucks. The trucks aid in protecting the stirrups while I handle the car for decaling. The one side of decals has been applied and have been coated with Walthers Solvaset. It will take a few applications and periods of drying to make sure there are no air bubbles under the decals. If a bubble appears, I will use a pin to “pop” the bubble and reapply more Solvaset. I just decal one side at a time. So it takes a few days. I have the other side and the ends to do yet. The K-4 decal set is nice, always working well. They only need about 40 seconds in the water before they are ready to slide off. The set gives you two sets of decals and many detailed stencils are included, but not noted on the diagram supplied by K-4. Luckily, I found a photo of the exact same car I am modeling. It helps with the proper placement of the decals...

Thanks Joe. After vacuuming the house and feeding the dogs, I was able to start the tank car. The decal directions said the car was supposed to be a 8000 gallon car, which is normally a bit shorter than a 10k tanker like I have painted before. It turns out the decal layout is a bit tight for the smaller car. I was able to make them fit with a couple minor alterations. The picture shows the tank car after I applied Solvaset, so the decals appear a bit warped but they will flatten out when the setting fluid dries... The first boxcar side is complete. I found a couple tiny bubbles in the decal film, poked them with a pin and hit them with more Solvaset...

Your painting looks better than the real thing, or at least to my eye it does.
And don’t be thwarted by electronics. If your EP5 is the one I think it is, it’s well worth getting it done by a techie (before there are none left).

Thanks!
Yes, the Penn Central E40 I made out of a K-Line EP5 will likely get a professional upgrade.

Tom, the tank car is much shorter than the boxcar. There wasn't much room for the decals but you fit them in and it looks very good. In fact, both cars look great.

Thanks again guys. I have been a little slow this week. Back to full schedule at work and it is interfering with my painting.
I hope to get the other sides decaled today. I had four more undecorated boxcars arrive. That makes 6 for me to paint and decal. Just waiting on the paint I need and deciding what I am going to letter the cars for. Two are already planned, so four others get a choice of some decals I purchased. I have D&H, Pacific Electric, ACY, and a few others. When I paint I will decide then.
John, the older 8k gallon tankers are not easy to find. The newer ones are a bit more plentiful...
More to come...
Tom

I finished the Penn Central boxcar. I had a little trouble with getting the decals to “disappear“ but it turned out okay. The tanker I started it coming along a bit slower. I used Tichy decals and they are good, but the have an odd thing in that they don’t lay flat, even with lots of Solvaset. Once they dried, I had to go back at them and slit the tiny folds that appeared. Annoying but manageable...
