Another extremely ugly locomotive is the Garratt. If you don't like your neighbor you put this locomotive in the window so when your neighbor sees it his eyes hurt, but don't forget to close the blinds or shades or you will see it as well!!
They can only put these engines in the roundhouse at night. If the roundhouse sees it coming is shuts it's doors and locks them tight. Now, see, this one fits on the Ugly-Cool cycle as something so ugly, that it is actually very cool. I actually think this engine is neat looking and would love a model of it.

Adam, that's the way I feel about the BL-2. It's so ugly that it's attractive. The New York Central never owned any but the Florida East Coast had 6 of them so one may eventually find it's way onto my roster.

HV, HB and Gary, the cab forward was a practical design that served a purpose but when I first saw it 50+ years ago I thought it was plain old ugly. Fortunately opinions vary so there are models of this monstrosity for those that think it is attractive, but keep in mind that I find the Santa Fe Warbonnet scheme esthetically challenged.* I have no idea why it's the most popular paint scheme ever.
*Note: Esthetically challenged is a polite way of saying (IMHO) that it's UGH-LEE!!!

Maybe Lionel will make an O Scale version of SP #3902. I know I would grab one! Gary. The photo in my post is of the 3rd Rail version of #3902. Can’t see Lionel topping that although it’s TMCC with generic steam sounds. Would that they would try though. I DID NOT KNOW SUNSET MADE THIS! HEY SCOTT... Gary.

Fortunately there was never a single Garratt in service ever in [North] America although ALCO owned the rights to build them. The few I have actually seen are behemoths but not a patch on a Big Boy, Allegheny, FEF-3 or SP CAB FORWARD!

This, my friends, is the Southern San Luis Valley Railroad D500. Clearly the ugliest locomotive every made by man. The SSLV made this thing themselves for the purposes of running on their short line railroad. Adam, I think you win the ugliest locomotive contest. This thing is so ugly it doesn't know if it's a locomotive or a caboose. Does it go on the front of the train or the back? All of the locomotives in this thread look like locomotives. Some are certainly not lookers while others are downright ugly but they all look like locomotives. This thing looks more like a mutant caboose than anything, but it's not a caboose. I'm not sure what it is. It looks like that thing I throw peanuts at at the zoo.

Ok, my asbestos suit is on. I respect this one, have ridden the real ones at Cass, and even bought one for my layout, but IMHO they look like agricultural equipment: HMMMM, RUN 'EM SIDEWAYS AND YOU CAN CUT HAY!! Gary.

Whenever I see am image of a Garrett, my question is, “Why???” The principal benefit of the Garratt design is that the boiler and firebox unit are slung between the two engine units.
As O.S. Nock states, the Garrat type holds several advantages over the Mallet type:
"This [the Mallet] was so designed to provide a very large engine unit, to be managed by a single crew, but to spread the dead-weight over many axles and thus avoid excessive loads on the track and under-line bridges, and at the same time retain flexibility of wheelbase to facilitate operation on severely curved sections of line. The Mallet, having driving-wheel units beneath the boiler, retains the limitation in dimensions inherent in the orthodox type of steam locomotive, while the immense length of some of these machines is itself a handicap. Except with oil firing, ... one cannot put the cab in front. H.W. Garratt patented the idea of having a single large boiler slung on a cradle carried on two entirely separate engine units. The boiler could be developed to ideal proportions, unfettered by any wheels beneath it. It could be kept short, and of large diameter, which is the best possible form for securing a high rate of evaporation."

OK, so I may have found a train even uglier than the strange one I posted earlier. Learned about this watching the Bachmann Trainworld live this evening.
Apparently there is something from train history called the Eggliner. Not sure if one exists in O, but there are certainly some offerings in G.
I guess they can be described as cute.
What do you think? Is the Eggliner cute or ugly?

Another Eggliner video. So here they look sort of cute, like little train bugs.
