I surmise that the Cool/Ugly cycle looks something like this. Ugly and Fugly aren't so far off from Interesting and Cool. I find some of these ugly engines to actually be interesting and in some cases cool. Having some on the layout would be neat.

Those are brutally ugly! They might take the prize. There may be some disagreement on this, but I’ve always found this one to be rough on the eyes. I'm with you, Emile. I love steamers but the Yellow Belly is the one steamer that makes me ask, "What were they thinking?" ... To me it looks similar to Raymond Loewy's T1:

That’s true. I can definitely see the resemblance. These were very sleek high fashion trains that had the most unfortunate front ends. Emile

I've always thought this was the butt ugliest locomotive I ever saw. It's so ugly it doesn't know if it's coming or going. It's so ugly they have to put a sheet over it so they can get it close enough to the tank to get some water. Why, it looks like it was beat with the Ugly Stick!!!

Yup, cab forward designs definitely push the boundary of acceptance. However, I do applaud the designer for fixing two inherent problems with a rear cab design, smoke and soot coming back into the cab and limited sight-lines.

I would say that I never met an engine and in particular a diesel or UP turbine or articulated steamer I didn't like but we seem to have here (1) AMTRAK electrics that are Toasters or Cheese Graters and (2) paint schemes that look like wild animal stripes. HOWEVER, most of all I will not have the name of the Lord Cab Forward taken in vain. Why, even this one that reminds me of my sister's dog "Woofie" (a Shih Tzu) is beautiful: Attachments:

I waited a while before I posted to this topic so here it goes. Is there any such thing as a ugly locomotive?

I have to go with Andy,(HB), on this one. The SP Cab Forwards were born from necessity...Asphyxiated Crew Members! What the ended up with was a panoramic view and 100% fresh air. Very cool looking locos. Maybe Lionel will make an O Scale version of SP #3902. I know I would grab one!! Would be incredibly detailed! In the meantime we have this Beauty! As for the SHITZ OOZE, well... Gary.

This, my friends, is the Southern San Luis Valley Railroad D500. Clearly the ugliest locomotive every made by man. The SSLV made this thing themselves for the purposes of running on their short line railroad.

Adam for your wheel - there is a plateau where cool meets ugly and it creates a version of "colugly" … I think it deserves a spot on the wheel before "interesting"...

I am going to need to rethink the hypothesis a bit.

Another extremely ugly locomotive is the Garratt. If you don't like your neighbor you put this locomotive in the window so when your neighbor sees it his eyes hurt, but don't forget to close the blinds or shades or you will see it as well!!
They can only put these engines in the roundhouse at night. If the roundhouse sees it coming is shuts it's doors and locks them tight.
