I just finished reading and looking through some pictures. Very interesting history. What I find fascinating is that it seems that the early history of every earl railroad had similar challenges. They never seemed to fully account for all costs and always need more money to finish and the ever present power struggle. So many of these histories would make for an excellent movie. So true Adam, I think we have the same problem today, just look at congress and Amtrak. It is also a little astonishing that it cost $25,900 per mile in 1868 to build the track. That number today would equate to $471,800.00. Small towns and big money. However, Trains magazine generally pegs the price at around $1.3m for one mile of track. That is 2 1/2 times the cost of 1868. No wonder we can't move forward on Hi-Speed rail.

Those Monetary Figures are astonishing!! I would like to see a complete cost breakdown of a few different miles of track as a comparison.
