Yesterday I noticed my laptop is dying. Battery won't charge (built in charger is bad) and screen goes black, having to re-boot and put everything back. Went to buy a new one and many features I like are no longer available on many models, DVD/CD player, backlit keyboards, or even the camera card reader, yet command 500 to 750.00, then have to buy add ons. Finally Best Buy had a recommended Laptop with all I wanted, but a up to 2 weeks delivery.

It's probably worth the wait, Walter.

Definitely worth the wait to get what you really want and need Walter. Nothing worse than second guessing or having to purchase add-ons for what you really want.
Gary.

I say its worth the wait. You really don't have any options at this point.

My PC is a Dell Precision 490...with XP Pro-64 (on it now). Wife has a smaller Dell, with.....XP Pro-64. Laptop is an older (5 years?) Toshiba. If I could get XP to work with the drivers, it would be XP....but it was 8, now 8.1 Pro, configured (while still 8) to look and function like XP. I have a "new" laptop coming with....XP Pro on it. Can't beat the price. Free!
Most new laptops have no CD/DVD player. If it has 10.....I had a 10 laptop, gave it to my son-in-law for work, AFTER I killed all possibilities of Telemetry and Tracking...then I killed updates. After WGA I killed all updates on my XP and 8 machines, so when the big scare of "no more support" for XP, I laughed. I'd killed all updates 8 years prior.
I've played with Ubuntu...have another tower through a KVM switch with Ubuntu on it. It's okay. Couple of things drive me nutz. Backup if something happens.

Personally, I am happy CDs are no longer used on computers. The same goes for mechanical HDDs, solid state is much better and faster. The only exception of course is for large storage use cases, such as my backup server. But I fully appreciate why some still want a CD READ/WRITE capability. Choices are limited but it sounds like some still exist.

Josef, I agree that it's worth waiting to get the machine you want.

Received my new confuser yesterday, (using it now). Going to take a couple days to finish setting up and transferring items I want to keep. My biggest problem is trying to remember all my pass words for numerous sites. Am I alone on this?

"Am I alone on this?"
No Walter, you have a lot of company.

No Walter, you have a lot of company. Like me. Most modern OS's like Apple Mac have a facility to store passwords, which frankly I could not do without. Maybe your old computer can be started up long enough to find if yours have been stored?

No password issues for me any more. While at work I had 13 frickin' passwords that had to be changed frequently and would not accept the last 9 that were used or any derivatives of them. KNUTS!!. Much simpler now. Done with work at this point....much fewer passwords.
Gary.

My biggest problem is trying to remember all my pass words for numerous sites. Am I alone on this? Definitely not alone. I have PW's for Apple repair,Motorola,Samsung,LG,CAT phone, work site and work intranet. Plus 3 aftermarket sites we use for phones. At home I have OGF,eBay,Amazon,bank,401K and email. I'm sure I missed a few but as you can tell I have them stored.

It will sync across devices, automatically saves new passwords, and many more nice security and useability features.

I am a 1Password fan. Have a family account so each family member can use. Separate vaults. Use it for credit cards, info on critical item (like camera serial numbers), and all kinds of critical info. Syncs across all devices.

Believe me, having a DVD/CD capability, saves a lot of work in transferring saved pics and data I use almost daily. I've cut my work in half. Its just finding new apps and updates I'm trying to adjust to. Its nice to have a bookmark Toolbar with ability to navigate quickly between subjects and apps.
