Sure would be neat if the smoke unit operated but I would say, for me at least, this would be optional. Not sure if I would run it much.

Okay, we wanted fans. What do you think? These arrived today. Looks to me that these are just short of a hurricane. The idea is to have a tube in the bottom and run the smoke under the layout... or elsewhere. Harry is working to complete the hopper cars and a bunch of other projects so this will take a while.

Thanks for the head’s up. They look fine by me, count me in.

Those look like computer cooling fans. Should be able to control the speed with some sort of dial. I'm sure one of the electrical geniuses on here can come up with something.

This is fun. We go from a static $50 accessory to a dual powered high thrust smoke remover complete with speed control that can be remotely operated. Before this is finished, it is going to be a candidate for a CTT picture.
Who knows what we need electrically?

Can we add a flux capacitor? I just need to figure out how to generate 1.21 gigawatts.
Seriously, though, this will be a very cool and unique piece for the layout. It will be an OGF exclusive!

Don’t know what that is. Asked Siri. So back to the future comes up? Harry mentioned using a diode to control the speed when I talked to him about noon. He is out of styrene and is conniving a way to get some.

Received two pictures yesterday and a cryptic text about the only way to get hobby shop stuff is to order on-line and go pick up from the parking lot. I think these were probably from existing “inventory.” More parts are needed. This looks like an interesting project but it will probably take awhile. Harry is really busy. Patience is needed with creative folks. Part of the base structure Collectors overhang the engine , How could we leave out the power.

Under the current circumstances, we can wait. I am sure Harry will be happy to get at his backlog in the meantime.

Incidentally, I have had parts deliveries while the lockdown is on. Unfortunately, we are not weathering the storm where the workshop is and it's none too clear when I will be there.

BILL, After installing the little fans you got to start thinking where to put the duct work for taking the fumes away.

BILL, After installing the little fans you got to start thinking where to put the duct work for taking the fumes away. That’s easy. Nearby there needs to be a scene with either a campfire or a burning building. Pipe it there. That fan looks as if it will pull and push the smoke without a problem. Or, someone could try running it into water and letting it be filtered like the originals did. Maybe we can have a contest for the best use of exhausted smoke. Sorry, I wasn’t clear about the hobby shop. Harry deals locally in NJ and his local store is closed except for on-line. Solution - order on-line and pick up in the parking lot similar to what some are doing with restaurants.

The two parts that I posted pictures of yesterday are the patterns that will be used to make molds for the smoke collector. Then casts are made that will, after clean-up, etc be the smoke intake pipes and the actual collection unit that contains the fans, etc. I asked Harry to take pictures so that we can follow along with the process of making these. Hopefully I will be able to document what he does, what is used, and a bit of the “ how do you do that?” Seems to me like we are starting in the middle. I will find out where the original two pieces came from and what they are called. Here are two pictures of the semi-completed unit from which molds will be made.
