This family was lucky? I'd say they were something else. This family should be charged with child endangerment as well as trespass.

Whoa! That was scary! Foolish for them to be doing that.

They look like they are Mennonite. Interesting.
25 years ago, I encountered a family of at least ten people and a dog walking on the tracks, when I came around a double track curve at 79mph. They were on an embankment and could only retreat to the other track as I passed by. Unfortunately their dog was struck...in front of what I assume was the grandparents and children. A hard lesson to learn....

It's hard to imagine that some people are so stupid that they think railroad tracks are a good place for a family outing.

When I was young in we used to play on the Rahway Valley RR tracks all the time. It was right behind our houses and out of service since the early 60s.

A few yrs ago I was driving down a road that borders the train tracks the train was stopped blocking the road I had to turn down to get home.So when I was watching the Fire Department They had just found the person that was hit and had to begin getting the person out from under the train. What was left.

We encounter trespassers all the time. Most are just casual pedestrians taking a short cut.
There is an interesting book called “Death Rides The Rails”. Is discusses various rail incidents over the history of railroading. One interesting statistic they cited was that from 1899 to 1910, the Pennsylvania Railroad had around 10,000 trespasser fatalities. That is almost 1000 per year.
They found that the people killed were not just hobos but a skew of society ranging from children to doctors. Every socio-economic level was represented in the statistics.
The high amount of deaths, coupled with the emerging practice of lawyers starting to sue the railroads, prompted the PRR to initiate safety and anti trespassing measures...

This music group had the nerve to share this video on their Facebook page about a month ago as though it was a funny/laughable situation. Looks like somebody managed to grab it and share it to YouTube because the music group took it down rather quickly after it was posted (I believe it was reported to Amtrak police).
This one is one of several we watch in our annual safety class at work. Really makes you shake your head when somebody thinks that stopping to wait for 5 seconds as a short commuter train passes is a waste of their time and instead put their life on the line.

That is just sheer insanity!! I have watched many different Health and Safety films pertaining to a lot of subject matter throughout my career and the general consensus over time has been that large moving objects appear to be moving slower in the mind's eye. I am sure this phenomena has been studied as well. My thoughts are speed is speed no matter if the moving object is large or small and I give them the respect they deserve! I wonder, did the band try playing on a freeway as well?

People just don't understand the vacuum the train creates at that speed, it can suck you in seconds... I was creating a video and was 3 ft back from the cross buck and a freight train blew by at 45 mph. I almost lost my camera.

Interesting videos, Jake. You have to wonder what, if anything, is going on between the ears of some folks.

Interesting videos, Jake. You have to wonder what, if anything, is going on between the ears of some folks. I work on a museum railroad (totally insular within a walled facility) and have witnessed first hand way more stupid incidents than I can keep track of involving visitors. Our speed limit is 15 mph and we usually run closer to 8-10 mph regularly and things can be scary even at that speed when people can't keep track of their surroundings and/or purposely put themselves in harms way. One that's always been a favorite of mine was a mother who decided she didn't want to wait and went to cross the tracks in front of us (holding hands with her rather young daughter) as we approached. The daughter, who couldn't have been more than 6 or 7 years old, had more sense than her mother and firmly planted her feet to keep her mom from crossing.
