UPS delivered a surprise package yesterday (Monday), and it's a real stunner of a locomotive: MTH's gold-plated Chessie ES44 #2019. MTH has clearly perfected its plating process. Last year's Santa Fe F3's were stunning... as were the company's plated Santa Fe and California Zephyr silver-plated passenger cars. And now MTH can add one heck of a stunning gold-plated locomotive to its "plated" roster. I haven't put the locomotive through its full inaugural paces yet -- just enough time yesterday to grab a few quick iPhone photos. I have a sneaky suspicion that these units will be here and gone before we know it. So if you like what you see, I'd check with a dealer fairly soon. On a side note... I paired the locomotive with a set of Lionel B&O "Columbian" 18" aluminum passenger cars manufactured nearly 15 years ago!!! I brought the cars (absolute MINT condition) to the Allentown ATMA show last weekend, but they didn't sell. So just for fun, I grabbed one of the cars to see how it would pair up with this gold Chessie ES44 locomotive... and all I can say is WOW!!!! I still haven't cracked open the 2-pack or the StationSounds diner, but it was like Christmas opening up the 4-pack. Arguably, these Lionel aluminum passenger cars represented the epitome of Lionel's aluminum passenger car manufacturing back in the day when aluminum ruled the stage. It's truly a shame that Lionel no longer produces such beautiful passenger cars. But this B&O set is likely gonna find its way as a "keeper" on my roster now -- especially that it has such a lovely gold-plated locomotive at the head of the train!!!

David
This was one of the last locomotives we got in at Imperial. While not my cup of tea I did appreciate how well it looked. The owner promptly informed us to pack it back up because he was taking it home. It was a stunner for sure.

The plating on that engine looks flawless in your photos David. While I'm not a Chessie,(cat), fan I can really appreciate that loco. MTH plated Passenger Cars,(SF), are stunning as well. We have two sets and I hope MTH continues this practice.
Gary.
