I was working on my 2020 "to do" list for the layout the other day and one of the items on this list would have never happened were it not for some photos I took for our Christmas Photo Album. When taking the photos, I was trying to get images from locations I had not captured before. As I looked through these photos, I was surprised to notice a blank space that is behind buidings along the railroad tracks. It is now item # 4 on my list to fill this space. I have figured out what to do and am just waiting for the supplies to arrive.
Have any of our members had a similar experience?

Brian.....you are so right....photos never lie! Often times I take a pic and then and only then do I notice a tree that is crooked or a figure has fallen.

Taking photos also gives me a perspective on how others would view a scene, layout, etc. and helps me make changes that will improve the layout.

In the old Dept 56 days, we always took pictures of a completed scene and just about always found things that needed to be corrected. It is amazing what our eyes and brain simply ignore.

Brian,
I think what you are saying is that it is harmful to our wallets if we look too hard at photos of our layouts.
It’s interesting though, sometimes we do need that forest for the trees look at our handy work to see what else is possible. Just when I think I am out of ideas and when I least expect it, I get that ah-ha moment that gets me in the basement for a couple of hours.

That scene looks pretty full to me! However I know exactly what you mean about photos showing things, or the absence of them, that you don’t see with the naked eye. In my case I take a lot of photos of detailing efforts on and inside of cars and locos. The resolution of modern digital cameras is such that the photo often reveals something - usually a defect like an unpainted surface - that you would not notice just running your eye over the work. The problem here is that if, as I do, you regularly share the photos with other hobbyists, the smallest defects in your work may become plainly visible.

I agree with all of the above. However, pictures can also bring attention to a scene or feature that was done very well and could provide insight to other areas on the layout.

Brian, I have noticed the same thing. I've taken photos of scenes that I thought were perfect only to see flaws in the photos that were invisible when I was looking at the scene. After posting a photo I have often wondered how I could have not seen so obvious a flaw.

Hey Brian, yes, photos are the best way to capture the area that may have been overlooked. I see this a lot with close up photos of trains that show the dust. I did not see the dust before I took the picture, but afterwards, the dust in the images just pops off the screen.
Regarding the "blank space" do you know what you are going to fill it in with? A structure or more lighting?

Charlie, a new building and some lighted trees. On order waiting for them to arrive.

Got to give you guys credit for paying attention to the details. I just can't get excited to spruce up the layout like the rest of you.
