All of my favorites have gone out of business. Wagner and Sons - Carlisle Maxwell's - Harrisburg Barry's - Elizabethtown Toy Train Shop - Hanover B&E Junction - York And in Maryland Catoctin Mountain Trains and the Train Room Since most of the stuff I buy is used for restoration/repurposing, it's whoever has what I want at the cheapest price. Lately, that has been Trainz. I won't patronize some, like Mr. Cupcake due to poor business practice. My son purchased a brand new MTH SD45 from him. Right out of the box, the engine would not run right. My son contacted the store to have it repaired under warranty. They told him they would not do it because my son was out of state. So, he's not going to York anymore? No problem. We won't even look over that direction when passing his booth. Who is Mr. Cupcake?

MTH’s current warranty policy relies on the dealer to make any repairs or provide a full refund if they can’t. MTH will reimburse the dealer.

We folk in the Detroit area had many train/hobby stores. We are now down to Great Lakes Hobby. There is one other but after the owner died the sons have turn it into a high-end toy store. Even all the big shows are gone. It sure was nice for many years though.

Please don't patronize any of our favorites. There is a new train store opening up in Thurmont MD. MTH authorized dealer.

I did not want to call out the individual by name and thought my comedic reference would suffice. He is a dealer that has been talked about recently on this forum who claims he's not going back to York.

There is a new train store opening up in Thurmont MD. MTH authorized dealer. What is the name? Location? Date of opening? If it's only half as good as Paul's shop, it will be a winner. Paul had a great shop there in Catoctin. He just wanted to retire. Years ago my son and I would take the drive south from central PA and visit that shop and hope to chase a Maryland Midland train.

Paul was great to deal with. I only bought a couple items from him but on one transaction over the phone, noting where I lived at the time, he offered to bring the MTH B&O ABA F7 set I had been looking for to the local Greenberg Show to pick up to save me the shipping costs. Some excellent service and a good deal on the set.

Pete is a Great guy.

MY local store is either Just Trains of Delaware or Nicholas Smith. Mainly Just trains. Others are Train Loft, Legacy Station, Valley Farm Market (Weedville PA), Antique Collectibles and Trains (Georgetown DE At the foot of the Georgetown Bridge) Mr. Cupcake (And yes I had to send a new Big Boy back as the wheels were off the tender and there was another problem but he repaired . I had to pay shipping but at least it was fixed), Stock Yard Express, Pat's, and a couple others.
I find it interesting that some, mainly one and not Mr. Cupcake, charges a very high price. When I was looking for my DDA40X this store wanted about 20% above MSRP. When asked for a discount his reply was I have it and no one else does. I mentioned it was OLD STOCK. His response was I got it, You want it or not. SURPRISE Valley Farm Market Had it and sold it to me. With that being said I have still purchased from him but very little! When I called him back and told him I had purchased one (as a courtesy) He ask where and was punching his keyboard to check. Then told me well next time I will give you a discount. WHAT? Well next time there was NO discount!!!

East Main Trains Thurmont MD. Just opened is my impression. That or just became an MTH dealer. 6 East Main Street.

Charlie at Valley Farms is a great guy, and character. I was so intrigued that I drove to Weedville and back in one day from the DC suburbs. That was a long haul. It was worth the trip. Besides what I had already purchased but did not wish to risk shipping, I picked up an MTH Seminole engine; beautiful paint scheme. And who could resist buying Weedville T shirts for the grand kids. The tourist attraction for Weedville is a large elk herd nearby. I went the wrong time of year, there was no bugling. The Valley Farm Train Store is one of the quirkiest/unusual train stores you may ever encounter it is in the middle of the middle of nowhere. If you live within several hours of the place you should go if only to get a sandwich to go, a Weedville souvenir and oh yeah, a train item or two. But call ahead. Charlie has many responsibilities and may not have time to fit you in unless he knows you are coming to visit.

In general, I am not a big buyer, so I don't have a 'go to' outlet. In the past, I would go to M. B. Kleine when they had the store in downtown Baltimore. I buy mostly from individuals; not generally off ebay for decades. Alfred

You guys should check out Hobby Express in Cranberry Township, PA. There is an introductory post over on OGR called “This is Hobby Express” that describes this wonderful store.
