I have removed one section of the big tower and it looks better in the consist. The mounting plates have been attached, including one for the small tower. For a little explanation, the mounting base should be a tapered diameter going from a 8 scale feet at the tower to 15' scale feet for the bottom attachment. That was something I could not do and so it only shows a wider diameter at the mounting base. The access opening for the outlet pipe is painted black to give the appearance of an opening and will not be drilled out. One large valve will be attached on the side for the outlet pipe. The oval 4' openings for access to the outlet pipe on the side of the units are not there. In the video the units have access hatches on each side rather than a cut opening I will use access hatches. The base and tower are complete. It was a job to get a straight line. The next step is to add details along the entire length of the unit and paint primer over the welds. _

After looking back at the pics. It does look better with the section removed. Can't wait to see it rolling through your layout.

Unbelievably good project, Wood. Should go into an article for Classic Toy Trains.

Unbelievably good project, Wood. Should go into an article for Classic Toy Trains. I agree, this is a perfect how to project for CTT. Wood, while I thought it looks good before you shortened it I do think it looks better now. It's just a little more in proportion. Outstanding!!!

Let me preface my remarks by sharing with you the enormous anxiety and stress covid-19 has had in our lives. We are healthy and that is good. Our company is closed and our best guess is we may be able to open in another 6 weeks. Enough said.
The savior to all of this is the gift, model trains gives to me. Deflection. I have been able to work on the layout about an hour every night. That work clears my mind. I love this hobby.
Here you go Gentlemen. It is finished. I tried to copy the video Josef posted at the beginning of this thread and I have come close. It has one less tower, the RR was Canadian Pacific, one of the lines I operate, however Lionel does not make a DASH9 CP unit and has very few CP GP30's so I switched to Canadian National. The engine is an Amtrak DASH9 I found a CN shell and replaced it. The GP30 is an Electric Motive unit and I have a CN GP9 coming to replace it. So I will end up with a CN lashup.
The discovery that large loads have to slide was quite interesting to solve. Think about going around a curve, The flat cars will reduce in length but the load does not. You have to provide a mechanism to allow them to slide. That is the bolster, they have to rotate left and right and slide forward and back.
Most of the details had to be hand made. The openings for inspection were available but all of the spouts and stairway step plates had to be cut and molded to represent a correct port or plate. The tube itself and the division plates were made from Plastruct parts.
This project was started January 27th which ends up being a 3 month project. It was fun and it is unique.
PS Thank you Josef for all of your help.

Very well done. As Country Joe said, you now have an unique one of a kind train load. I'm very proud you solved all the problems and undertook this endeavor. Congratulation on this project. On another note: The old tower which we replaced, was cut up into sections and put on flat cars and hauled out to a scrap yard by the railroad over the temporary tracks we had at the plant. The temporary tracks were taken up a couple days later.

It is my turn to say WoW and thank you to Joe, Josef, Brian, Rick, Fab, RJ, Adam and Andy, who are all terrific modelers. It has taken a long time to be in this group. You get into the habit of going to the train room and it is hard to stop. Today I am cleaning the tracks. I gotta find another project.
